Could this be a new marketing strategy by Nintendo, or simply a bundle up at the office, as it seems that Nintendo today officially released 18 screenshots of the game Wii Chess which is slated for the upcoming release of 18th January, however one of the screenshots in question seemed a bit odd... it had a message on it, and it wasn't any ordinary message, it's one that annoys all players that get the message:

Unable to connect to the Internet. Confirm the Internet settings of the Wii console.
Error code: 50299

Surely it's not meant to do that....

Be sure to also take a look at the other screenshots for this very game.

Well, none of us will forget it has online play.

What about the fact that the Online aspect of it may not actually work? (Though I'm sure they'll fix whatever caused them to disconnect... I assume their Wii was actually connected).

Hopefully they'll fix any 'online' bugs in time for it's release. If anything, just delay it. I'm sure most of us can wait, we've got Brawl coming just around the corner, anyways. xD

My guess is that it's just a small internet issue, not involving the Wii but possibly the player's router.

Atleast now they're appealing directly to those of us who constantly spin the roulette wheel to see if we have to try and convince our Wii that wifi still exists.

    Reeks of fanboy.

Obviously said Wii was not set up for the internet.

Of all board games, Chess is one of my favourites. So, this hasn't got Wi-Fi?

It has got WiFi. Just that, they were not connected to the net or something when they took the shots.

This could well be just a problem with their router, isn't necessarily a problem with the game...
