Yesterday Oricon released a survey that asked 1000 men and women who their favorite video game characters were.
Here are the ten characters that recieved the most votes ...

Thrilling non-scientific poll time! Online research site Oricon polled 1000 men and women about their favorite video game character. The results?

10. (Squall Final Fantasy VIII)
10. Yuna (Final Fantasy X)
10. Professor Layton (Professor Layton series)
8. Toad (Mario Kart)
8. Doraemon (Doraemon series)
7. Chocobo (Final Fantasy series)
4. Slime (Dragon Quest series)
4. Solid Snake (MGS series)
4. Pikachu (Pokémon)

2. Cloud (Final Fantasy VII)
1. Mario (Mario series)

The top three breakdown for men and women is rather interesting.
For men, it was 1). Mario 2). Cloud and 3). Solid Snake.
For women, it was 1). Mario, 2). Yoshi and 3). Cloud.

Everyone loves Mario and Cloud!

      At least Rinoa didn't make it on the list, guess people in japan saw how much of a annoying bossy, and manipulative girl she truly was.

          Isn't based on the Twin Snakes model anyways? Besides, having his own category, an Old Snake concept art would've been a more logical choice.

          No its not based on Twin Snakes because the Twin Snakes is a remake of the original, and thus he wears the same clothing he did during that game, but simply looks updated since its on a superior console. Also Old Snake wouldnt look right for brawl considering its geared towards a younger audience.

          Ah yeah, I looked at the Sneaking suits. I meant the concept art for MGS4 would've been more suitable, I wasn't talking about SMB.

    I can understand Mario, Cloud and Yoshi in the top 3 but Pikachu in fourth. Weird. (To me anyways)

      Japan doesn't like much of MGS, believe it or not, the sales say it all and the decline in them. Japan loves RPG's and Cloud is the typical hero.

      He's far better than Zidane and Squall anyway.

        I guess they're just into his hair. You could impale someone on that. Squall is kinda like Cloud, which is why he's on the list too, I guess.

        MGS feels very westernized, anyway. But I just don't dig those FF guys so much. Kinda nice to see Doraemon on the list.

          Some similarities but not really similar imo. Squall is lucky to even be on that list tbh. I would have picked Zidane over him imho.

          I love RPG's and FF, so Im biased on that front. While I love MGS it just has a different feel to it then RPG's.
          But MGS4 is pure awesome though.

          You're missing the point.

          The 360 is not popular in Japan thus Master Chief, Big Daddy, and Altair wouldn't be considered as favorites. Besides, Master Chief is the only real popular one from the ones you listed and guess what? Halo isn't really that big in Japan.

          And I do realize the other two games are on the PS3 as well but like I said, they aren't popular enough to match the likes of Mario, Pikachu, and the ones listed in the article in terms of popularity.
