5 Games That Are Better Than Silent Hill: Homecoming

Dark Arcanine | September 30, 2008 | Top List | PC Playstation 2
So, by now everyone should know that Silent Hill Homecoming is being refused a rating for Australia, as well as recieving a handful of negative reviews, disappointing a lot of fans. Blogger Ken La Kira has made an attempt at lightening the mood a little by typing up an article containing five other games from the same genre which they deem as better.

Ok, so perhaps that doesn't make you feel entirely better but at least you have alternatives. The list consists of:

  1. Silent Hill 2
  2. Resident Evil 4
  3. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly
  4. Condemned 2: Bloodshot
  5. Dead Rising

Is this your list of five better games?

Go to the source to find out why these games top the new Silent Hill.
Let's face the grim reality before us: the new Silent Hill won't send you screaming to the soft, safe bosom of your closest loved one. But there are other games that will give you a sense of true terror. When you play these games alone, your mind will transform a simple shadow on the wall into a deadly phantom. Your sleep will be interrupted by the screaming of dying bodies. The daylight will be your respite, but the darkness of the setting sun will bring the fear born from these games back into your hearts...

I haven't played Homecoming yet, but I' d be willing to guess that SH 1, 2 and 3 will end up being better than it. I'm not saying Homecoming will be bad, but it'll take a fair bit to surpass those 3. (and maybe 4, though everyone seems to hate it ... I loved it).

    Fatal Frame 2 = yes. <3

I don't know how RE4 and Dead Rising come into the list. If you're looking for a horror game, RE4 and DR wouldn't be my first choices. I'd pick Homecoming over those two.

    I haven't played Condemnded 2 ... yet.

Yeah, well I scratched that one out months ago. Well Dead Space is looking good...and considering how horror games are looking these days, I'd say it's probably the only one I'm surely buying. Lately there's been a hell of a lot of Survival Horror in the gaming news lately thanks to Homecoming, I guess, would that mean that the influx of horror news is coming to a halt?

Then again...there's always SIREN for me anyways.

Im unsure. Reviews for Silent Hill games have not always been that high. Somewhat of the Sleeper hit series.

Oh and Dead Space ftw. Watched that developer interview last night about what they think scares audiences/players. Blood fantastic stuff.

Im still sad Silent Hill 5 had to be poorly received. Horror gamers still craving for their next "Sh2-experience".

I dunno, the PS2 Silent Hill games have always recieved good scores. True, they were never exceptional scores, but good scores nontheless. (well, I consider an average of 80% + to be good). The PC an Xbox ports were never as well recieved, for whatever reasons, but that's usually the case with ports.

80% (besides OXM and IGN) is the general area to which I have been seeing SH5 reviews as of late.

I guess im just trying to continue to attempt and justify the purchase of this game. I should stop haha.

I don't honestly care which game is better, you shouldn't be comparing games of the past to now. Yes its true, that SH2 is better, but honestly who gives a shit.
If you like SH and like what Homecoming is doing buy the game and play it. If not, don't. Im tired of seeing comparison games when clearly its not the same and shouldn't be compared to its predecessors.

No offense Roz, and Dark Arcanine, I just wish people will like the game for what it is, and not compare which one is better.

While those will end up being better, I just can't help that people are stuck on the past and not moving forward. While games like RE, SH are moving away from the past norm, I find it a welcome sight cause they're taking steps to make a different game.

Comparing this SH to the rest or other games is like comparing apples to oranges, to Pears, to banana's to Nectarines....etc.
Point is, you can't compare them.

      Very very wrong.

This SH was trying to succeed the past games with almost the same gameplay...hell that's what they were touting all along. "Sticking to its roots", how are you not gonna compare the games?

And "Who gives a shit"? Dude, it's understandable that you might not be as much as a fanatic as some of us, but try not to say silly crap like that...makes you look more ignorant than you think. Who gives a shit? WE GIVE A SHIT, we're pretty *bleep*ing tired of seeing the franchises we've played and thoroughly supported turn into something else. Pretty sure Final Fantasy fans would be pretty damn pissed if the franchise suddenly turned into a shooter, let's pretend Dirge of Cerberus was financially successful and Square Enix decided to spam the Shooter genre with the franchise? Get the picture yet?

So really...if you don't like these discussions, well too damn bad, we got issues with the game industry and we're voicing them...it's the LEAST we could do after getting constantly screwed over.

Um no. I do care cause I have played those games, but the fact remains nothing they say, or tout will ever bring back the same style of gameplay or story or whatever the hell you want to call it like those past games. I said it once on another article i'll say it again. Games are not, and will not, EVER be the same as the old games in the past. This is fact. I don't ever compare games with the past, cause its stupid. Yes the quality may not be up there, but times has changed and how the game is made is changed and we NEED to move on.

PM me if you rather argue with me further on this.

That doesn't even make sense. You're saying that times have changed so games must change too. But nobody is complaining about the changes or evolution of the Silent Hill series. Heck, I'd love for Silent Hill's faults to be fixed, and I'm sure many SH fans would feel the same way. We don't want them all to stay the same as past games - That would get boring.

But making a game that is worse than previous games (a "devolution" you might call it) isn't a sign of the times changing. It's a sign of the new developers making a shitty (or below average) game.
Of course we're going to compare it to previous games in the series - They set a standard, so now the makers can't suddenly slack off and give us an average game just because "times are changing". That's a bullshit excuse.

I must admit, I've never owned a horror game and so never played any of these.

I would play Resident Evil 4, the first two movies impressed me greatly when I watched them... even if I couldn't sleep for two months without a light on.

If the Resident Evil movies scared you then you wont sleep for weeks after playing a Silent Hill title.

I will say this though, Resident Evil Outbreak Sucked in my eyes. The saving system was completely stupid. I can't believed I wasted a good several hours playing that game only to die and have to restart over again. That game was the worst RE to date. Thats my opinion, I'll wait to be thrashed.

I can't stand games where the save function is a massive fail. That's like with the PC game Freelancer, so annoying when you've just made a massive achievement and you blow up.

Thats a little short-sighted and blunt do you not think. Thats your opinion fine, but personally I enjoy comparing games from the past to now. Older games set the benchmark for the future games to come. And over time, graphics are really the only feature that improves, alonside quality of sound, although that contributes to a lesser extent.

I do not get stuck on the past exactly, but I think the past games of most franchises have been better, and I set them as personal benchmarks for the sequels to match. Titles need to earn my wallet cash, and I want to see each installment within a franchise be better, and with fresh concepts. Otherwise it is merely money spinning from the developers, which conversely i understand.

So who gives a shit? I give a shit. I know you probably did not mean to come across as so unastute and narrow, boards do that. But different people value the areas of the industry differently.

I do come off blunt, however I rather not get into this debate on here. PM me if you honestly want to discuss this one on one.

I just feel the past is the past and we need to move on to the future. Nothing will ever be the same as the games in the past. Its the same for movies, and we just need to learn to accept this and step forward to the future generation.

Well comparing past games does have a slight thing to it called hindsight, things are always better in the past for some reason.

"I played Wind Waker and Super Mario Sunshine before playing their N64 counter parts and didnt seem to find all of the shiny golden greatness that all of these fanboys prattled on about under the shoddy polygons. I found the new games to be better in every way possible."

Theres one last part to that I'm going to omit, but in any case nostalgia makes things better, so we see it as some great treasure as oposed to the newer counterparts. I will admit however that alot of developers do lose the touch of a game that draws in the original fanbase as a series progresses, but thats true with everything.

Which is why the Indie Game Development Scene needs to be respected and worked on by Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. At the moment, coders and programmers can get indie development tools, but I would like to see engines and tools become available to the end consumer, drag and drop materials and easy to understand instructions.

Even better, companies SUPPORTING the education of learning the programming language and sorts. Producing visual applications to aid the education of indie game developers would motivate many more to get into it.

Each developer usually has 1 or two games produced for inspiration rather than money-motivation. We would see more good titles if consumers could easily access certain tools.

I mean, how hard would it be for these consoles to read EBooks. and For the PSN and XBL and Wiiconnect24 networks to offer coding and programming EBOOKS for the consumer. I'd happily pay.

I guess LittleBigPlanet counts towards this in some respect..
