Geek Dad over at Wired looks through the new features of the DSi and sees how it compares to the DS. From backwards compatibility to mp3 playback, and the new cameras- he isn't impressed- but will probably buy one anyway.

This newly christened DSi is an obvious member of the DS family, with its stylus and minimalist clamshell design, but Nintendo would seemingly like us to believe that it is a wholly different animal.

Even amid insistence that the system has a place alongside the DS Lite on American retail shelves, at least for the foreseeable future, I’ll wager that many, like me, can’t help but wonder if this device will prove to be the new face of mobile gaming. And, if so, wouldn’t it be prudent to get onboard early?

Well, I guess that depends on how these new features stack up. Let’s take a look, shall we?

I see no reason to buy one of these; there doesn't seem to be anything too special about them. And besides, most of the people who would want one already have a DS.

There really isn't a reason to buy it, most of the things that it does are things done by devices that most people already have (iPods, mobline phones etc). I genuinely hate the lack of back compatibility, but I guess it was sort of inevitable.

It isn't so much that they encourage it Fatal Error, it is that they do not make the mistake that other companies have made by standing in the way of it.

IIRC, A Sony rep said that they would not do anything to hinder the spread and growth of technology- for that is how new technologies are developed. or something along those lines.

When Nintendo and Microsoft failed to try to put restrictions, roadblocks, and preventions on their handhelds and consoles (and failed pretty miserably) Sony had the last laugh.

well the fact is, obviously nintendo knows About piracy.
If you think about it, all consoles, handheld and home, all have homebrew and piracy.
So, Nintendo istrying to just refresh things, not encouraging you to buy it in anyway.
