Oh my dear lord. MSNBC has managed to make the ultimate laughable list by the games they have picked as having the most cinematic video games. Actually, most of the list isn't too bad, but when you get to number one, prepare to have milk spill out of your nose (and I hope you were drinking milk, otherwise see a doctor immediately!) I don't want to ruin the surprise, so just look at the list.

Unplayable cut scenes, cinemas, or in-game movies have been a part of video games for more than 20 years. They help advance the plot, serve as a rest area for players and produce shock and awe like any good movie.

While the technique is evolving (some developers like Valve shun them altogether in favor of total interaction), cut scenes often make games feel bigger than they really are. And nobody does it better than the following games when it comes to memorable cinematics.

Wtf no mass effect? That was one of the most cinematic games I've ever played.

Just about the whole list is flawed. I put this up here for humor reasons more than anything else (not to say MGS4 or Halo 3 do not have their cinematic elements, but there is a million other games that could have made this top 5)

Final Fantasy VIII deserved to be on that list without a doubt.

But oh well - what can you do.

Final Fantasy X deserved to be man. Honestly, any of those titles would work.

Metal Gear Solid 4, I agree with entirely.
Halo 3, I agree with somewhat.

Final Fantasy VIII DOES deserve a spot on this list! I felt it was the most cinematic of all Final Fantasy games!

Agreed. Dunno how Heavenly Sword made it on the list when Mass Effect was a lot more cinematic..

I think they're like me. It's not that they're okay with it, they just realise who made the list and don't care enough to mention it.

I love it when obvious non-gamers assemble lists for the non-gaming public using press releases as sources

Xenosagas cutscenes are so long they offer a save point in between them, definitely should be listed.

How is this laughable...it's really not a bad list. They made a good case for Halo. I can't speak for Heavenly Sword, as I've never played it.

God of War is unquestionably highly cinematic
    MGS had to be there

...and obviously you dudes didn't play Double Dribble when it released, it was pretty impressive. When you go for a dunk and it switches to that crazy dunk animation thing.

Ok...so it wasn't good, but it was pretty much unheard of. Good list imo, especially after Old Wizards best of Zelda with no mention of Majoras Mask, Wind Waker, or Ocarina ffs.

I played (and owned at one time) Double Dribble. I can't argue at the time it was released, the little cut scenes of dunks and crap was cool as hell...... but, to have that on the list negates the progression of how well cinematic scenes are done now. They should of had a separate section for classic titles that helped get us where we are today or something.

I think the classics has something over newer games. No doubt are games in this generation awesome, beautiful great controls. But back then a game like Double Dribble no doubt was kickass.

Also you have to remember this is their opinion and while we don't have to like it, we can respect their reasons. Heavenly Sword I'll have to agree that it deserves a spot. I played that game over 10 times and im still awed and amazed at it cinematic scenes. The reasons they gave was good enough. If this was a top 10 im sure Mass Effect and FF8/10 would be on there.

Heavenly Sword? Fine. God of War 2? Great. MGS4? Of course. Halo 3? Never played, so can't speak for it. But... double dribble?

Halo 3 had a lot of cinematics, but they were diced up and spread throughout the game. Except for the end, of course.

I somewhat find it funny with these lists, because you hardly have to read the article to know what the list is, based on the games the news stories are attached to

And almost all of the cut scenes use context sensitive button-presses to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Apparently a quick-time sequence is some form of innovative new technology to these people.
