SlapStic contributor Eclipse expresses his disdain for the modern MMO with this list. Addiction, possible girlfriend loss, and bank-account drainage are mentioned, among others.
5) They're addicting
No joke. Seriously, just check out the number one reason for some of the withdrawal symptoms if you don't believe me. I have friends who play for hours on end trying to get their fix of one more epic item. They give up lots of social opportunities in order to do "one more raid" in the hopes of finding what they need and not have it looted by a guild mate, or to make enough gold to buy what they want from whatever vendors may be available. Most people will try to turn this into a compliment about how awesome the game is, but now you're prepared for it so you don't fall into the same trap.

What does Yuna and Cid cosplaying have to do with MMORPG's anyway?
Good point on the photo, hehe.
It's so silly that people hate on MMOs without any substantial reasoning. Addiction? That's all on you, the player. I enjoy MMO interaction of the PvP variety, absolutely hate the grind and other aspects that give the games their addictive qualities. That's one reason I really prefer console/PC games though: they're short enough to let you see the light at the end of the tunnel. With WoW, I just see an endless winding road...
I've thought about going back a few times, but would like to think that chapter is closed....it's pretty much over when you shut down your chara and let a couple expansions go by.....there's really no way to catch up. I'm looking forward to the next MMO to come out on the PS3 for sure.
It seems the trend for new and upcoming MMOs is time commitment -- less of it. Companies look at WoW because it's the biggest fish in the pond, and they learn what to do or what not to do. I think they've realized a lot of gamers like the MMO experience but can't stand devoting hours per day just to get somewhere.
SPEAKING of addictions, I hope this is not your child.
And I agree, if I could hop on for an hour or two and still be able to maintain my character I would be in an MMO to this day.
Well, okay, maybe not as far away, but I still stay at least 100 feet away!
I'm sure in like 5-8 years MMORPGs are going to be like 10 times better than they are now.
I honestly don't have the time or attention span to play WoW anymore. I only got to level 55 before I finally got bored and did the laundry and took out the garbage. I don't know how people can sit on their computers and play that all damn day.
Then when I got the news that The Lich King was raising the level cap to 80, I thought, "Oh, Jesus Christ."
