OXCGN takes a look at 8 pet-peeves in gaming that really, in modern times, should have seen their day. However, they still persist and keep re-appearing in game after game.

If we can innovate games like Mirror's Edge, then why can't we do away with some of the frustrating ideas that persist in gaming. So please slip over to the site and check all 8 out, you probably have more, so please share them.

While video games continue to push boundaries to dazzle and amaze us each year, I’m getting sick of some trends that simply won’t die. Many of these brilliant new games use the same features that might have seemed innovative back in their day, but are not anymore. While each person has their own gaming pet hates, these are my top 8. May these game faults lose their seeming immortality and die a horrible death, never to be resurrected again.
1. Games that reward you for failing

I line up the perfect jump. Fingers on the controller tense and ready. Run, run, run, and press A. Jump… damn it all, I missed and fell! Oh wait, lookie here; there’s a hidden treasure! So screwing up was a good thing after all. Yay me. Screw that! This has got to be my biggest gaming hate. Games shouldn’t hide secret items, health packs, weapons, treasures, and other goodies in places that you will only find if you fail a jump, mess up an attack or make a mistake. Players who succeed a jump across a large yawning gap should not be worse off than the player who fell to the bottom.

Some are a bit too general, like poor stories and graphics over gameplay. However this is a pretty good list, explosive barrels in particular are very overdone.

Poor stories are a general problem.

That's true, but I think Silver Mirror meant that he wished that the list was bit more specific.

Like, instead of just saying that poor stories are commonly a problem, he could've pointed something out specifically. Like how so many stories in "hit" games are so similar(examples being games like Resistance, Halo, and Gears of War, all with very similar settings a plots).

I'd like some innovation in stories.

Like the MGS series. I'm not going to say that it has the best story ever or even that it has a good story, because that's a matter of opinion, but at least it's something different from a generic action game.

(For the record, I love the MGS storyline )

I pretty much agree with this person. He seems to know exactly could use some improving. As far as the explosive barrels go, I suggest as a replacement we bring in robotic kitties with C4 on their ears!

Very unbiased list, seeing as almost anybody would be able to agree with those. <3

I agree with nearly all of those! Great list!

Except the exploding barrels and such. Haha, those are my specialty! It becomes my mission in a game to blow up every single one of those things. Sure I die a lot of times due to those pesky game missions and the enemy coming after me and all that, but hey! Gotta take the good with the bad!

I agree with everyone of them. Although, the last example of MGS, I thought it had a loading bar? Or is that just for installs? The list is perfect though.

The loading bar thing is pretty horrid. I agree with the cut scenes, but since skipping them often throws you off in terms of story (like in MGS), I think all games should have a cut scenes library or something...

Ace Combat has a story cutscene library you can watch, either in whole or in part . . you can choose . . which isn't that bad really, and they can be skipped in-game

I can't say I agree with the list, it just comes down to taste then anything. I mean some of them, to me, sounds more like whining then anything. But there was a few that could use tweaking, like the frame rate, but nothing is perfect out of the gate. Its virtually impossible to find all problems before launch, that's the purpose of beta's. And sometimes even the players and the devs miss it. The story within games i'm not sure since there's barely any examples shown how they're lacking.

As for the graphics over gameplay bit, that's up for debate. I remember Roz stating that Graphics are a must in this generation, but not enough for that to be the only thing in mind though.

Don't really agree with the 'rewards for failing' and the side quests one, of course they can get quite annoying if they happen to frequently and tend to be far too similar but I find the side quests to be fun. The barrels really depend on the game they appear in, when they appear in ones like TimeSplitters they tend to be quite fun.

That's true, I know I love the Halo 3 barrels simply cause my friend made an awesome map revolving around them. Basically it's capture the hill between two points on the forerunner/ark level. One point is littered with explosives that continue to spawn and the other has some weapons. You start with brute shots. Basically it makes for an absolutely crazy explosive Crazy King game.

Just don't make games hard. It gets ridiculous with Megaman 9 for XBL DLC.

I don't need in-depth narratives (I love the Dynasty Warriors games after all), but if a developer wants to put a story in the game, it had better make some sort of sense and not go all over the place. I agree with most of the list. I don't like having to track down a ton of collectibles in games like GTA; the kill frenzies were enough for me for a change of pace.

I greatly agree with the graphics over gameplay peeve. Some people get on me for not playing certain games when I say they're too short or not fun enough, and they reply that the graphics are awesome. Who gives a crap? I still play NES, SNES, and Genesis games and love them for their gameplay. And then I see "gamers" say those games sucked because of the graphics
