This list fails due to the fact that the dragon sword isn't mentioned.

And...no gunblade? FFVIII? Bah. Soul Calibur/Soul Edge look hideous now.

Uh, do they really mean to put the Master Sword at the top of the list? Isn't there like 50123821 different Master Swords throughout the Legend of Zelda series?

        Storm* Dec 6, 08
Heh, well there have been different ways of obtaining it throughout the series, but the sword has remined the same. I think the Master Sword is a tad bit overrated, though.

I agree with the majority of this list.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with that list.

Hooray for the Soul Reaver being there. I do love seeing underappreciated games appearings on "Top Lists".

what no Daedric longsword? I am disgusted and appalled at this list not to mention a 3ft blonde midget's sword getting the top spot...psh

    this list fails tbh...
where is the RedQueen? who wouldn't love to have a sword with a handle that can be twisted like a motorcycle to charge it up?

what about the Sparda sword? whats wrong with having a sword that transforms into and axe, spear?
or the dark dragon sword from ninja gaiden!?

    Epic-culier fail!

I don't really see the Master Sword as all that memorable, sure its famous for the games its in. But it's actual appearance, abilties and such aren't all that special.

It gets good rates though. It does look pretty cool too really. :3 Plus, the Legend of Zelda series is so popular.

Frostmourne looks the best out of all of them.

    BANDITO ATTACK Dec 6, 08

somehow i think the crystallized tuna is a bit cooler than a stupid plain ass sword thats just stupidly long.

    Capn Droid Dec 6, 08
A couple of these I can agree with, but other swords just look bland.

    Where's the Halo Energy Sword?...

Your kidding right? There's no doubt it's a fairly cool sword but it's in no way a great one like Frostmourne or Masamune or anything.

It *bleep*n kills in one hit, can frostmourne do that

Frostmourne is connected to the Lich King and thus the entirety of his power. When was the last time the Halo Energy Sword could suck souls out of people? Besides with it connected to the Lich King (and now being wielded by the Lich King and Arthas as one), who knows what freaky powers it has. For all we know it might be able to send out a giant frost nova or something. At the very least Death Coils get shot from it ^ ^.

Psh, the Energy Sword is totally fair game. The design is rather unique, and it's fun to use. Frostmourne is cool too, but Masamune is just a plain and unreasonably long katana. Emphasis on "plain," and an embodiment of Sephiroth's weak ego.

It seems many people are debating the nominated swords on this list though.

I agree that a sword doesn't have to look crazy intricate to be awesome, but a little originality would be appreciated. Example, I think the gunblade is a pretty original concept and should have been on the list. Maybe they considered it a gun, instead?

It's also strange to see two swords from FFVII on their where there's so many unexplored options. At least Soul Calibur got on the list.

Beatrix's Save the Queen from Final Fantasy IX and Squall's Lion Heart gunblade deserve to be on this list much more than the Master Sword. Let's also not forget the Rainbow from Chrono Trigger.

Honestly just because zelda is a popular game doesn't make it's sword a popular one.

It's so simplistic compared to the other ones, the only originality in it is the hilt where you hold it.

And they chose that over the Fairy Sword or Fierce Deity's sword?

    Crap.

Rest of the list is okay however.

      Dark Arcanine Dec 6, 08
A sword doesn't have to be overly intricate to be the best sword, there's lots of more factors to take into consideration than just looks. It does look cool anyway.

    Final Blade Dec 6, 08
Well another biased failed attempt at a top ten gaming swords. I disagree and for the reasons Avalith, Storm and a few others. Master Sword number 1? You have got to be kidding me. And why the hell is Masamune blade 10? I say switch that sword with some other in the list so it can be like on the top 5 spot.

      Bale Fire* Dec 7, 08
How can a top ten list fail? It's all about opinion. Obviously the author (and probably many other gamers) think that it is a good list, and exactly right.

The biggest thing here to remember is that Sephiroth's Masamune has not been the only Masamune in gaming history. Going back to my previous comment about Chrono Trigger, a playable character's best sword is also known as the Masamune, and there have been many other instances of it being used. I mean, seriously. A frog wielding the Masamune is nowhere near as awe inspiring as a sword having its own shrine.

        Final Blade Dec 7, 08
I disagree Avalith, there's only one Masamune blade as far as i'm concerned. The rest are all just imitations not the real thing.

Also Silver, I said another biased top ten. I also stated why it fails due to Avalith's and Storm's comment.

Yet again, I go back to Chrono Trigger. The Masamune featured there was not only much more influential than Sephiroth's, but also came first. In my semi-professional opinion, there are two, and the only thing Final Fantasy VII's swords have going for them really are the size, Masamune included.

          Bale Fire* Dec 8, 08
Of course its biased, its opinion. If I did a list it would be biased because of my experiences, if you did one it would be biased because of your experiences. Opinion is biased, humanity is biased.

      Final Blade Bashes NIntendo's Blade.

        Final Blade Dec 10, 08
No, I have nothing against Swords from Nintendo being used. I would never consider the Master Sword number one though.
Linkerd do yourself a favor and stop assuming I hate nintendo, I just rather see a more fluid and diverse list.

@Avalith - "In my semi-professional opinion" Since when were you professional? Your opinion is no different then anyone elses. However that sword isn't at all similar to Sephiroth's, you can't even compare them. We don't even know much on Sephiroth's sword other than it length. I guarantee you if I ask any gamer about a Masamune sword, they'll immediately think of Sephiroth's. Probably due to it being more widely accepted and known.

@Silver, It wouldn't be biased though. Since for one, I don't make a top anything. I find any number list biased. Instead what I'd do is make sure the list at the end is diverse. If I happen to make any list, I don't base it off my experiences, that's the problem with these lists. And why ultimately they fail.

The Master Sword is very deserving of the top spot, but folks need to realize that in the original Zelda, the best sword was the Magical Sword. The Master Sword, as we know and love it, didn't come around until LTTP. Oh well, probably preaching to the choir. Still a worthy article.

w00t! I love the list! I know all but the last 2 and I agree with it completely! My 2 favorite swords are on top! Though I think that the Buster Sword should've been number 1! xD It has so many more memories for me... ah... 5th-10th grade.... xD

umm, The Buster Sword is Cloud's Weapon from Final Fantasy VII/Kingdom Hearts. Its Also known as the Ac Buster, but tech. speaking it belonged to two other people before Cloud.

I remember when Blizzard started selling a replica of Frostmourne and I wanted to snag one, but it was a few hundred dollars. I still want one, but they'd be so rare that one would likely cost several thousand over eBay

I wasn't sure because I knew the Buster Sword was from a few games.

My favorite from the list is the heavenly sword. although, i would make it a pole weapon, but that's just me.

Some faves not listed are the machete from Halo. very simple and utilitarian. Also I'm kind of fond of the Biggoron sword.
