Not a bad list, different from many in any case.

I remember Chris from Suikoden III, and Sialeeds (and Queen) from V.

Don't remember Manah, but I never quite finished Drakengard 1, never got the second one.

Kyaaah, Mercedes is indeed cute as a button XD

Ahhh, Yuna. I liked her well enough, but I prefer Rikku and Lulu (whether they're typical or not).

        1) Useless whore; "Squall, save me from these monsters!", "Squall, I'm unconscious, carry me through half the game!"
        2) Dumb brat; "I want to make a political statement. I know, I'll join a rebel group, hijack a train, and TALK to the president!"

        There, two.

I'm biased though. I'm usually not a fan of MOST JRPG characters, especially the women.

HAHAHA this is epic. I knew I wasn't the only one who found her to be bitchy, spoiled and manipulative. Good going RCG, another thing we agree on.

Rinoa had some decent story on her, but of a rebellion group and her father being that big head hancho. She was a very playful girl but very seroius and hardly anyone took her serious besides her resistance members. Then she got possessed by a powerful sorceror and was potentially one of the earth's biggest enemies. Torn inbetween emotions for squall and her ability to be possessed. I'd say she makes a wonderful character.

Ashe on the other hand.... ugh.

I am so sick of Yuna!

Yuna and Tidus may as well have been fish for all the personality they showed, seriously.

    This list isn't very good..

      Final Blade Dec 21, 08
Opinion "Top 10" articles usually aren't.

Also Yuna and Tidus showed more of a two way love street throughout the whole game then Rinoa and Squall, and possible any other characters in the FF games. I mean with FF8 it took until the end of the 2nd disc for Squall to show anything for Rinoa and even then it was her demeanor than really sparked it. Cloud started to like Aeris towards the end of the first disc, but we all know how that ended. And Tifa was only after FF7 ended and on AC. Zidane and Garnet the same thing towards the later stages of the second disc if my memory serves me right.

Why the hell is Ashe on this list? She looks like a male for christ sake and showed no real interesting parts for her to be on this list.
      @BANDITO ATTACK- haha so true.

@tidus04- Considering this is an opinionated list, as usual, it appears she died far to early to be considered the top of any JRPG women.

Ashe is garbage. I agree with Aussie Legend on the lack of personality with the FFXII characters, albeit possibly Balthier.

I find it bizarre that neither Tifa or Aerith are on the list. They're two of the most iconic JRPG females.

    And Cissnei? Really?

    Killosity Dec 21, 08
Author of this list just googled JRPG Women and slotted in some names? Because Ashe was a monotonious slag who lacked any real personality or compelling motivation. Especially coming from the delight that was Yuna from FFX (and even her bubbly self in X2).

And I must agree, Riona was a little annoying at times, but I believe that most of her annoyances derived from Squall being a constant, whats the word, asshole.
    • 1
      Final Blade Dec 21, 08
So, does that mean most male assholes end up with the annoying bitchy girl? I mean I liked Squall when he was an asshole. I mean he really did have similar qualities to me, not the asshole part, but a loner and doesn't like help. He also seemed like a type of guy who doesn't take shit from anyone. But he mellowed out due to her manipulation and all that jazz. It's a shame.

Why Ashe was even on this list is beyond me, I rather have Fran then anyone she was more interesting.

Edit: It's not like I can't see why people like the nice "romantic" Squall which he turned out to be. FF games tend to have that romantic love spark, and I guess it just so happens it had to be Rinoa that started it. Although I prefer Irvin to get the girl then Squall, but it always the main character. But the thing I like about Yuna and Tidus love relationship was it started immediately on both sides, at the start of the game when they meet. It's not Cloud and Aeris/Tifa, Squall and Rinoa, Zidane and Garnet, FF12 lacked this, which started late in the game. That spark happened immediately which made me like them more. I guess I prefer it to happen more naturally on both sides then it just randomly happening at the middle or late stages of the game.

Squall should've stayed an asshole. He was may more interesting when he was an absolute dick, as opposed to the emotional carwreck induced by Rinoa's presence.

The breaking point for me was when Rinoa was in a coma, and Squall was confessing the dumbest shit at her bedside. WHAT. THE. BLEEP. One minute he's this callous badass figure, next he's a sniveling little emo boy having flashbacks of how much he missed his sister and how everyone else failed to understand him.

I blame Rinoa for the massive puke factor of FF8. Selphie is a close second.

Quistis should've been on that list if they had to include someone from FF8. I liked her from the moment she popped out of that submarine and blasted away the mech-spider with the mounted turret. Rare to see so much badassery exhibited by a female JRPG character.

        Christ, I hated that game.

Final Blade kind of brings up a point for me, in that I've always felt JRPGs tend to depict female leads in context with their male counterparts. That is to say, female leads in many JRPG games fail as standalone characters and need the male lead to fully complete their personalities... and define them as women. I absolutely resent that.

        End rant.

LOL I have to admit, your post made me laugh so hard it gave me muscle cramps.

Well I suppose Rinoa could give me a reason to dislike the game. But I really did like FF8, I just didn't like Rinoa's character. I mean why would any male allow some girl to mold you into what she wants? I mean wouldn't that make the male a puppet or Tool?
It started going downhill when Cid ask him to be the "leader" he was born to be!

Yeah I like Quistis as well. She also uses a whip too.

There's enough discussion about this in the FFVIII forum...but for one, if Squall would have stayed the way he was, non-talkative and such...the Garden would have likely been destroyed. Imagine Balamb Garden under attack without Rinoa's influence on Squall:

Soldier: Sir! We're under attack! What do we do?
        Squall: ...Whatever.
        Soldier: ...We're doomed.

Closed-book personalities like Squall don't get far like that. I used to have a quote in my signature from Harry Sullivan: 'Lonliness is the most painful human experience.' I believe that.

But you know, Squall's 'emo-ness' began from the very beginning of the game...with his twisting and turning, complaining, and silent mood. Rinoa didn't play a big role in that. All she did was be open and fall in love with Squall, she didn't force him to fall in love with her...you can't force someone to do that. But if being alone makes people more 'badass' well...goodbye human race.

The story was going downhill by disc 2 anyway -- a big bang that ended their world would've been way better. And I don't give a enough of a damn about this game to really discuss why Squall should stay the same, or the ramifications of his personality never progressing (or regressing). If I truly felt it worth the effort, trust me, I would have proposed a much more sound argument for the matter. No, it's really just a disgruntled gamer's rant, as you can see, not meant to be taken any more seriously than that, so you can put your flawless reasoning back in your pocket.

FF8 is what it is, and it happened years ago. I accept that, and I don't really play JRPGs anymore.

I still think Rinoa was a terrible choice over Quistis though. And yeah, Final Blade, a lot of guys seem to like her for the whip. Dirty fanboys... XD

To further answer your question, FB, I didn't really care for FF8. It had a lot of potential for an epic game, but the story was seriously marred by... coincidence after ridiculous coincidence. The male and female lead were terribly weak, and the Junctioning system made me wanna rip my throat out too. But wasn't that game supposed to be about love?

          Storm Dec 21, 08
My...flawless reasoning? I don't think it's flawless at all. All I'm trying to do is shed some light on the Rinoa-haters.

But it is a story about love. FFVIII is usually bashed because it in no way kept up to the legacy that is the over-rated FFVII game. FFVII has yet to be topped by Square Enix. Hell, I don't think they ever want to top it. They'll probably just remake the 'epic' game. I think Square Enix thought they should just experiment with FFVIII as they already gained enough success from FFVII, then take things back up a notch with FFIX and even X. It's like roller coaster ride with their games.

All JRPGs have their coincidences. In fact, that happens all over film, television, and games. Characters having been at the right place at the right time, blah blah blah. Sure, FFVIII had many flaws, such as it's backstory...most of the playable characters lived in an orphanage together? How lame. The junctioning system is a love-hate kind of system, but to me, the overall story was decent...though it consisted of quite a few 'damsel in distress' situations.

And Squall still has his 'cool' side, FB, at least if Kingdom Hearts is meant to be taken seriously.

LOL I just used the Whip for reference.
I'm not a dirty fanboy, you couldn't even call me dirty in general. I'm Squall, I'm a loner, and while I do care about others, there's times I don't. I actually think girls deserve better then to choose me for their BF. But that's completely off subject.

As for a story about love in concerned, Final Fantasy 10 not only surpassed FF8, but 7 and 9 as well. If you're going by romantic love story then they did surpassed it with FF10. As for a story as a whole, excluding love, then no. Then again I think, imo, it tied with FF7 as the best FF game I've played.

Kingdom Hearts characters like Sephiroth, Cloud, Squall, Aerith, Yuffie aren't canon to the FF original characters. So Squall has no cool side anymore. Irvin should have been the one with the love story, not Squall.

So because he's in love he's no longer cool? Oh wow, that makes so much sense. You know, FFVIII never got a voice-over cast or a sequel, we can't say for sure how much has changed after the game ended like FFVII.

Did you just say that FFX is better than FFVIII in terms of love? Huh...matter of opinion, but wow...

          Final Blade Dec 22, 08
Yes I did, cause both Tidus and Yuna fell in love on first sight when they meant at the BEGINnING of the game. Cloud's love with Aerith was barely anything and it was short lived on the end of the first disc, not to mention Tifa which required a sequel movie. Squall and Rinoa started getting there at the end of the 2nd disc. FF9 same thing. That's why that love story was better.

No, the reason why squall changed was cause of Rinoa and her constant Brattines, Bitchy, annoying, manipulative self. If she kept to her self and not try to control Squall, and how she went about it, Squall would still be kickass. The only thing I liked about him towards the end is his sword and his guntrigger limit break. In fact I like Irvin so much more then Squall. Quistis is still badass though.

Who the hell believes in love at first sight? That's a stupid concept that relies on looks more than anything. Once you get to know the person, you may not be fond of their personality, and that "love" is gone.

Love doesn't happen overnight. It takes time to develop them. FFX was rushed in that sense. Ok, so what I'm getting from you is that, because they fell in love so damn quickly, that makes their story better? Hell no, that makes it more fairy tale, but not better.

Prehaps thats why I hated Squall as a character. I love the carefree happy characters who make mistakes, enjoy the company and almost drench themselves in the rude stigmatised gay stereotype. Of course, when they look girly and begin to become void of any male parts; then its a little worrying.

Interesting how we each perceive a character differently from our own lifestyles, morals and values.
