Top 10 Most Overrated Video Game Franchises

This list of the top 10 worst video game franchises describes which video game series have been heralded more than they deserve. The games aren't necessarily bad, but they don't deserve the level of praise that they've received.

#9. Guitar Hero

I’ve never been able to figure out why anyone likes the Guitar Hero series. Why has this series sold so many games? Is it because of the shitty background graphics? Or maybe it’s the bad music in the series, especially in the third installment, the so-called “Legends of Rock,” which features songs from overrated bands like Kiss, and the Sex Pistols. It’s because of these reasons that unlike many of the other franchises on this list, the Guitar Hero games aren’t just overrated, they aren’t even good. When you think about how bad these games are, it’s hard not to laugh at the fools who pretend to “riff” with their most rock star inspired poses in their dorm room, surrounded by a bunch of drunk or stoned friends. It’s also hard not to include Guitar Hero on this list.

    I'm surprised at the lack of Final Fantasy on that list. I thought it was cool to hate on Square Enix these days? =[

    List should be rename, "Top 10 Game Franchises that are great but I'm gonna wail on for the site traffic".

      You do realise Final Fantasy 1-6 are old school Nintendo games, which pretty much excludes them from any negative Old Wizard list, right?

    Old-wizard is just doing what they can to unite all gamers. As you can see, no one is bashing GoW or Halo, fanboys instead join together and fight off the scapegoat, Old-wizard. Someone has to take the beatings in order to unite a war torn world, they just realized they were that someone.

    I agree with two games on this list.Those two being Halo (THE most overrated video game series imo) and Pokemon.

    I don't like saying this because I don't agree with their taste in video games, but DAMN do they have poor taste in video games.

        That's because it deserves criticism.I wouldn't be surprised if there was never again a series that becomes as overhyped as Halo.

        I'm not saying Halo sucks, just that it is NOWHERE near as great as people say it is.

    Yeah but how much Halo fanboys LOVE the series and how far they will go to remind you every chance they get that they think Halo is the God of all video games, far outweighs any amount of criticism.

    Not to mention how much Msoft hypes and advertises the Halo series is second to none.

        Well I obviously don't go to the right places as my experience is the total opposite.Maybe because I don't like Halo and therefore not going to things relating to Halo only shows me the Praise side.

        But I can only base my opinion on what I have experienced and so I deem Halo to be the most overrated video game series there is.Until I experience otherwise (which for the reason stated won't likely be ever) I will continue to think that.

          Yup, it must just be you seeing as the user scores on metacritic for the Halo series are 8.1, 7.9 and 7.2 (Halo 1, 2 and 3 respectively). Those scores seem about right to me.

          I'm not even much of a Halo fan, it's just this blind view that Halo's invariably overrated is annoying.

          Well I kinda agree with you, Gamesta100. I mean, I liked Halo for the story and everything. It was an alright/pretty good game for the most part. but it is a bit overhyped. Or at least it WAS.

          Certain friends/family used to always use Halo in everything. "Hey, so what are you playing?" Halo. "So any games you like coming out this year?" Nope, I got all I want: Halo.
          Then they're fanboys, and every chance they get to bash the PS3 or Wii, involved Halo. 'But they don't have . . . HALO!! Halo beats all other games in the world" (I'm serious, this is what I hear being said by them, and they're not alone.) Then every time I hear something about game parties with family members, guess what is being played: Halo.

          If I mention any other game, it is shot down instantly as garbage, because it's not Halo. Now, it's calmed down a bit lately, and they've begun to accept that there are other games out there, but I'm telling you, Halo is VERY much overhyped in some places. To the point that it's blind and without reason, simply due to fanboys of the series.

    Eerr if I can understand why Pokemon is first or even GTA or Halo in the list, I don't understand how Ghost'n'Goblins is said as overrated, as Half-Life saga or Tekken.

    Playing Half-Life only two hours is ridiculous for that universe. That's only showing that the list wasn't made seriously but just for provoking.

    I don't agree with that list. I mean, the Pokemon RPG's weren't the best RPG's ever made, but they're so goddamn addicting. Whenever I'm bored I find myself playing Pokemon Red or Silver, and I'm 18.

    I agree with GTA 4 being overrated, but GTA: San Andreas is underrated tbh. That's the one that should get a 10/10.

      I never really thought that Grand Theft Auto IV was overrated, to be honest, but as you can tell, I'm slightly biased.

      However, the entire Grand Theft Auto series is in no way overrated, as I'm sure many would agree. But this particular article didn't narrow it down to just Grand Theft Auto IV, they call all Grand Theft Auto games overrated, which is just bullshit.
