Locke Webster has compiled a pretty extensive list of the 50 best strategy games of all time. There are some deep cuts in the list that makes it worth the read including Dune 2, M.U.L.E., Phantom Dust, and Sins of A Solar Empire.

Putting together a list of the Top 50 Strategy games is like grabbing a handful of pins and seeing which one hurts the most. Like every pin that pricks, every game involves some form of strategy. Sure, we're a discerning bunch--not to mention absolute suckers for punishment--so we decided to stick our hands in anyway to see what we'd come out with.

Obviously, with literal decades of titles to choose from, we knew we'd need some ground rules to make this all work. We started out with nearly 100 games before we finally whittled down the outliers and redundancies to the point that we were safe to say that the Command & Conquer series didn't hog nearly a fifth of our list (though *SPOILERS* it still gets two nods). We decided to look at factors like a game's quality, it's historical importance, it's ability to stand the test of time, and (most importantly) how memorable it was--and still is--today.

Among you, there will be doubters, nay-sayers and the like. But we have faith that this is the creme de la creme of the strategy games currently available. To make it through this list, we recommend that you keep your mouse hand ready, limber up those hotkey fingers, and prepare for total war. Because frankly, that's what most of these titles are about.

And after all, if you disagree with us you can always let us know in the comments section. So let's not waste time gathering resources. It's time to jump into action.

These are the Top 50 Strategy Games of All Time.

Off the top of my head: Tactics Ogre, FFT, Shining Force, Front Mission 3, Herzog Zwei, Vandal Hearts. I've heard the Growlanser series is also excellent but I've never played them.

Disgaea (and other NIS games) are tops with me (though I didn't care for La Pucelle Tactics, but I didn't play that until after Makai Kingdom even). Not too surprised Disgaea got mentioned, it has a strong cult following. Disgaea is actually relatively easy, so long as you're willing to devote time to get the right weapons, character class (Majins PWN, Divine Majins PWN more), and specialists (namely Staticians, Armmasters, and when that's done, gladiators). They didn't mention Transmigrations though, as if leveling up to level 9999 isn't enough, you can do it again and again and again and again, etc.You need to, if you want the best of the best character.

I have Overlord too, but ummmm, my disk doesn't work anymore, I wasn't able to finish it -_-

I wanted to play Jean D'Arc, since I heard it was good. Ditto with FFT.

I'll probably get Valkyria Chronicles eventually (once it is cheaper).

Ah, sim city 2000, I miss that game. Sim City 3000 too.

Want to check out Sins of a Solar Empire too. I tried to win the Neoseeker contest, but that was a no-go -_-

Civilization IV is another game I might get, once it is available on the cheap. I enjoyed the demo.

    /running commentary.

Nice to see Valkyria there, I love the look and feel of it. I want it pretty bad.

Saw Starcraft a mile away, it was that or Age of Empires II.

One good one that comes to mind straight away for me is Halo wars.
