A group of editors here at UGO.com scoured their memories for the tales that fooled even the savviest of gamers. Some of these legends live on, and are still "purported to be fact" by some. So if your friend tells you one of these yarns (or if you fell for them) don't feel bad; a whole lot of people fell for them too...

Remember the simple times before the Internet when gamers had to rely on their friends and the occasional monthly mag to update them on strange cheats and Easter eggs? Those were the days, back when you could spend nights trying to unlock Shen Long or revive Aeris only to realize you'd been duped.

To honor these pranks and rumors we present you our favorite. These are The Best Video Game Urban Legends.

Oh, by the way, I know a guy, who knows a guy who knows the Mortal Kombat SNES blood code, if you're interested.

Does blowing in cartridges really not work ? I almost refuse to believe it

It definitely worked for the SNES. It worked like a charm every time, and all my games still work today. So I call shenanigans on this list!

There's no way it doesn't work. So many of my cartridges have gone from "not working" to "working" all with a simple blow.

(and I'd much rather blow on my cartridges than try to fix them with rubbing alcohol )

I would've liked to take that whole comment WAY out of context but it would've made no sense.

I wasn't the only one who did the same on the console itself as well, right? The cartridge slot part I mean.

It took me a while to try and phrase that comment so it couldn't be taken out of context

I know for a fact that blowing on cartridges and such has worked for me over many different systems including GameBoy games, GameBoy Advanced games, and even the controller ports of a GameCube (my cousins').

There's no doubt in my mind that it works.

It has to work. It's worked with all my Nintendo products and Sega cartridges.

@Seeker.....I ALWAYS blew on the inside as well! It made me feel better LMAO Then I would blow on the games, then use alcohol.

@Gothic Girl.....we use a LOT of alcohol in the electronics industry to clean contacts and such. It's non corrosive and dries quickly. Just don't use it with power on. LMAO We use a more pure alcohol than rubbing alcohol, but it will do in a pinch, so rub away!

LMAO, the Mario is a commie one is great.

And wow, I never knew about Polybius. If thats true, that is crazy. And a little bit scary. A game that causes amnesia, insomnia, nightmares, and possibly suicide? Wow.

Heres an Idea, DON'T DO ONE NUMBER PER PAGE. waiting for the site to load everytime i want to see the next entry is bullshit and instantly puts the site in question on a no-visit list for me, Because i know they only do it for advertising hits.

Here's an idea, if you have positive feedback or recommendations for a better template we do listen: content@ugo.com. I am sorry you feel that way about our site becoming a no-visit, but a lot of online publications do this and in these troubled times we would hope that a little clicking won't cause any longterm physical or psychological damage. Ads are a part of internet life, and pays the bills like commercials on TV, and one page ads in magazines. We are working on making the user experience better, and are open to suggestions, but I would hope people are savvy enough to realize without ads, big internet sites would not exist.

      Cheers.

Sorry, but i have real distaste for people like you who advertise their site here for free, then force people to click on many pages in a mediocre article just for the sake of revenue, why visit a site that causes me such inconvenience when i know much better sites that can do articles without such tedious page loading every 2 minutes which, btw, really hurts people with poorer connections like me, also, your site is no-where near large enough to warrant forcing the same advertisements on your audience multiple times per article, and I'll bear in mind your ideology is to make money for the website even at the expense of viewer leisure. And don't use the tired excuse that other sites do it too, That's your opportunity to get a 1up on them and do something better, Why don't you make tons of good articles and gain loads of profit from hits instead of squeezing as much as you can out of the few that you do have, IMO it just shows malcontent for the people who actually do want to read your articles. Also, i won't contact your email, I find it perfectly fine to leave comments where you seem to be advertising your site for free

Here's another idea. Don't be so lazy, it's not that hard to click next. Sure it might be more of a convenience to have it in all one list. But to put it a "no-visit" just because you're too idle to click next? Sorry if i'm wrong, but that's just terribe.

You don't seem to take notice of the people that have slow ass computers that take lengthy amounts of time to load pages.

What Capn droid said, You call me lazy, but look whose too lazy to read my own comment where i say i have a slow connection and each page takes roundabout up to a minute to load, and i've seen lists like this that go up to a 100 pages. Times that by 30 seconds to load on a good day and 20 seconds to read, and thats 50 x 100. thats FIVE THOUSAND seconds, (1 HOUR 23 MINUTES) to read an article. bullshit.

I've done that too (minus the emulator), but their point is that the urban legend is there's some sort of secret of the other side of the flag pole.

Everyone had their own thing. A+Left to B+Right rapidly, hold A while moving around the D-Pad in a clockwise motion, jamming the B button into the back of the system...

I always used alcohol on my N64 games, I would dip a Q-tip in it and clean the inside. Made them like new.

    I thought everyone did that...?

Most of us are not that sophisicated. Good ol' blowing tends to do the trick regardless.

hehehe everyones rubbing things and blowing i spent a whole summer in the arcade trying to get to the fire/ice boss my mate said is at the end. what a freakin liar. but not as bad as this other kid, he told me his uncle is a scientist and he invented real pokemon by gene-splicing their relevant animals, like squirtle from a turtle, charmander from a lizard, ditto from some bubblegum. And after extensive cross-examining and questioning, I asked him to get a squirtle for me, and he never did. The bloody liar. he said that the ditto escaped and morphed into a floor tile, and then killed his uncle and blew up the lab. using volatile chemicals.
