There have been quite a few memorable game heroines over the years. But who are the best of the best? sfgate.com have listed their top 9 greatest video game heroines ...

From the day when video games developed the graphic capabilities to simulate cleavage, women in games have been designed mostly from the blueprints of a horny 13-year-old boy's fantasy. If a female character wasn't in need of rescue - yes, we're talking about you, Donkey Kong - she seemed designed specifically to reinforce negative body images.

But there have been a handful of female video game characters that Brandi Chastain would be proud of, with more seeming to appear in recent years. Below are our picks for the nine greatest video game heroines of all time.

          I have played/I own/watched all of the above and I still contest that Miss Valentine reign supreme over this...Redfield woman.

          PS. I'd like to see Claire take on Nemesis!? She would have her legs ripped to shreds instantly.

          Considering what she went through in RE2 while she was barely into her 20's (never mind in CVX), I think she can MORE than handle herself against a lot.

    That's actually a very good list. Someone's actually put some thought into it, as opposed to "Good breasts, she's on. Good breasts, she's on. Left one's lower than the other, she's out."

    Well....I bet Jill sometimes got cold walking around in those boots during RE3. She didn''t even wear a Jersey. Thats dedication, courage, bravery and commitment.

    No in all honesty they are both fantastic. I guess I am just still sour because Jill has not had a game of her own for quite some time. And I really do consider her to be the main character of the series. (Probably because when I was 6, I played as her during RE1).

    I thought Claire in RE2 was fantastic. Her and Sherry really were a great team!

      Well to be fair, Chris is the only main character starring in his 3rd game. (Which suits me because Chris is my fav RE character).

      Well...Leon and Ada were a great team. Sherry's only time she was useful was when she could fit through those small vent ducts and whatnot. Dodging Cerberus dogs as a 12 year old was a bit of a rush.

    I very much so approve of this list. Finally, a list that's actually got girls worthy of being called some of the Greatest (playable) Game Heroines ever that isn't based on breast and butt sizes.

    Zoey - LOLWUT?? how? they might as well include some female bot from Quake 3.

    and Chun Li but no MK chicks is great too. Mirror's Edge girl and Beyong Good & Evil one in the same list with Lara and Samus Aran is amazing as well.

    this should be called "A pointless list of random female characters".
