Rich Knight from Blend Games writes a top list for the best launch titles of all time. The games range from the NES up to the PSOne and even the Sega Genesis and Nintendo 64.

A launch title can’t really break a console (Or, maybe it can, see Luigi’s Mansion) but it certainly can make one, and to celebrate my love for judging a system entirely on the first games that come out for it, here are my top five favorite launch titles of all time.

BAT? Wow, didn't expect it to make the list, heh. It paved the way for Soul Calibur, weapons-based fighting game...sure do miss it, my favorite was Kayin.

Wii Sports was a brilliant launch title. It captured the essence of Nintendo's vision for the Wii and turned it into a fun game that was sort-of challenging while being easy enough for the layman to get into.

eh, it's a good tech demo for what the Wii is meant for. As for a game though, you'd never really play alone, and even as a party game something like Rock Band is better.

The only reason I'd put it up there is that it comes with the Wii.

Which Zelda? Twilight Princess was also for the Gamecube.

Yes but it was out on launch on the wii.

Being the first zelda title to ever come out on launch.

Haven't played the game myself, but other Zelda fans seem to consider it one of the lesser games of the series. I don't think it really had that much impact as a launch title either. Compare to SM64, which really defined the N64 and its direction, TP seemed to come off as 'just another game'. Doesn't help that it was basically a Gamecube game modified slightly to work with the Wii controls.

well you just said you've never really played the game so.......

And even so, all the raging fanboys only acknowledge OoT, to them no other zelda game came close or ever will and thats simply because it's the first 3d zelda out there.

And if your comparing this games impact to the FIRST EVER 3D games impact then thats flawed.

Obviously SM64 had more of an impact simply because it was the first, TP was good but not blow your mind good, but if your comparing it to that then it'll make the game seem even worse.

Few games have had an impact like SM64 since it was the first of it's kind.
Don't get me wrong there are great games, and even games that change how the genre plays (like what RE4 did to Gears of War) but there isn't that many games out there that creates such a big impact like what Mario or Zelda did.

I've never heard of BAT before to be honest. Was it really that defining of a moment? I'm surprised Halo didn't make the list, considering how much people seem to rave about the series itself.

Some stellar choices in terms of the two Mario games.

Wasn't Super Mario Brothers not actually a launch title? I thought NES actually launched with just Mario Brothers...unless that was only an arcade game.

In Japan, no, in the rest of the world, Super Mario Bros came packaged with the NES.

I'm 100% possitive that Super Mario Bros was an NES title.

No, Super Mario World was for the SNES, Super Mario Bros. was for the NES.

Different game entirely. Seproth you're thinking of Super Mario World for the SNES.
Super Mario Bros and Super Mario World are different games.

protip: You can tell by the World part of the title.

Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Brothers were probably the best of the five. SMB, not only one of the most influential games of all time, was also what everyone was waiting for. Super Mario 64 could have even been more anticipated, since it was the first 3D Mario game ever made.
