A look into recent video game trends that have taken the industry down a road for the worst. These common gaming practices have only served to increase profits for the industry while feeding us the same old, same old release after release.

Let me start off with, if you are anything like me you have been struggling to find a game lately that brings you in and keeps you there. A ton of games these days are being pushed out the doors, complete or not, and it is really starting to show. Granted, there are certain elements in video games that we have grown up with and accept, however lately it seems that many video game trends are doing more harm than good by adding to the bland and totally non-innovative game play that the whole industry is currently suffering from.
Before the video game industry can think about moving forward and making the final step to take over our lives (...I am in full support of their World Domination by the way, as long as I can still watch movies from time to time), there are a whole list of things that need to be addressed. The industry has been getting lazy in their development and while new creativity is always welcome, there are a few nasty developer habits that we first need to take care of that are literally sucking the life from us:

Unlockable content is fine in my book. It's bad in heavily story-based single player games, but other than that its fine.

I don't know about this article. It seems like something crawled up that guy's ass and he's just seems pissed at everything.

Wouldn’t it be nice and refreshing if you played a game on easy or medium and a certain plot element played out one way, and in playing it on hard would present the plot element in an extended or alternate way?

    That would suck IMO.

"This totally takes the pressure off of gamers to think more before acting in games. Remember the great old days in Doom or Quake when you escaped from a battle with less than 10% health remaining and you thought to yourself, “Oh God! I gotta be careful!”? Remember when that happened and how you didn’t just run down the hallways and jet around corners, but instead you were crawling slowly along and peering around corners (complete with your actual head moving a little trying to get a better view)? This is what is known as “creating tension”, guys. We are teaching our little video gamers that it’s ok to get shot in real life because you can just hide in your locker for 10 seconds and you will be all better. You can leave in the reviving of fallen characters, that is a cool co-op espect, just dont make it so "rinse and repeat". Create tension in your games that you never even planned for."

Also its easy to crate tension with replenishable health. When your getting shot bad and you see your screen turning red or black or whatever it builds up tension because your like "oh ffs i gotta get cover FAST" Its the same thing as running out and trying to find a medi pac except you have a better opportunity of surviving with replenishing health and not dying and going "Wtf thats bull shit"

On the other hand though, replenishable health lets you feel more like a tank and allow for simply walking into trouble, blow everyone and everything to hell, then allow yourself to regenerate. In some games it's great, but in others it's a horrible idea, and it really is getting used far too much these days.

Yeah but with normal health it sucks because you usually end up with only a tiny bit of health after a battle and then are just really pissed that your going to lose if some guy just pops off one shot.

Its not tension, its just damn frustrating. Especially when your trying to find one and you cant your just like "Oh ffs, forget this I;ll do it later".

This happens ALOT in fallout 3 when you are really low on ammo/health and you cant find something to replace it and you know there are enemies about. Because you have just wasted all this time and your forced to reload to a time before you even entered that area.

Anytime after searching the supermarket for whatsherface whose name begins with M (Moya?) in Fallout 3, had I not sold most of them for the sake of having an actual challenge, I could of had somewhere in between 20-1000 stimpacks.

I'm sorry but if someone's having a hard time on a game it's not the games fault, they just need to be better or play on a lower difficulty.

What? I just searched that place where are all these stimpacks?

I was just in the place with the fire ants in the tunnels and ran out of nearly all my ammo and only had a couple mines, 7 grenades and 15 bullets to finish the job. It was quite frustrating.

The supermarket? There were around seven in and around that medical cabinet in the storage room with the robot. And that was on both normal and hardest difficulty.

As for the ammo if you aren't finding enough just buy some, it's not as if there's anything else to spend caps on.

I bought all the ammo I could from her in megaton. Is there any better way to get caps than just doing quests? because thats all I've been doing and I only have like 200.

It depends on how far into the game you are, but carrying as much as you can when you're out in the world and then selling it is the easiest way.

If you're still getting problems you can try making a run for Rivet City or Tenpenny Tower and buying ammo from them. It's pretty simple stuff really, no offense, just don't waste your ammo and go for headshots, sell what you don't need and be strategic when you fight. Mines and grenades are perfect cripplers so you can just run and fun if you're in a tight spot. Make sure you've got the most powerful armor and weapons available to you in good condition as well. I'm being patronizing now aren't I?

You just need to remember that it isn't an FPS and if you run out to twenty fire breathing ants without enough ammo then you're getting your ass BBQ'd.

I don't know why people keep posting blogs in game news sites. There's more blogs than there are news anyways.

...This chart makes no sense. As profits go up boredom goes down? That sounds like a golden age of video gaming, not the putrid mess of sequels and Wii-Sports clones we live in today.

To me it sounds like this guy is just complaining because he's one of those nerds who spends hundreds of hours beating every game he can get his hands on with the most jacked-up difficulty setting possible. Sorry, but no. It just seems like he's saying "OMIGOSH DEVELOPERS MAEK YUR GAMEZ HARDDER CUZ IM SOOOOO GOOOD AT THEM OH AND DID I MENSHUN THAT IM SO GOOD AT GAMEZZ IM COMPLAININ CUZ DERR TOOOOO EEEEEAAASSSYYYY!!111!!1!!1!one!!1

I agree with the chart, though. 2010 will be awesome.

The author whines like a little bitch IMO. Just because he has nothing better to do means that the novelty of games has worn off for him. Perhaps leaving his mothers basement, seeing the sun and getting the endorphins pumping would put him in a better mood.

Ha, this guy is a huge ---. I can't really get what point he's trying to make, and the whole post seems like a bunch of raging rambling. The chart makes no sense, either.

The guy needs to get out of his house.
