It is very difficult to just pick 10 and everyone has their own tastes and may not agree with the list, but openly debate the top 10 console RPG's of all time! What games were missed?

Honorable Mentions: Earthbound, Dragon Quest, Legend of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy 9

I think if I were publishing a list to the internet and trying to sound authoritative, I would at least take the time to read back over it and fix the formatting.

Don't know why you're complaining. At least the best games really were put in their place (i.e. SNES and PS1 era games).

Leave the guy alone, if he likes FF7 so much, why does it bother you?

Suikoden II should have been on there as well. Best RPG's ever.

No Final Fantasy Tactics or Mass Effect -- seriously?

I love it that these lists declare shit like "of all time" when they're so subjective. They should be retitled "My favorite RPGs of all time" because really, that's what it is. Stating "of all time" so boldly is rather, I dunno, demeaning to anyone with a differing opinion; hell, I still remember when the poster just started insulting a commenter for disagreeing with another list.

There are some nice games on there, but they hardly even deviate from a specific era of gaming. Come on now.

Well, most people account for the "wait five years" before you can enter the hall of fame.

Honestly Mass Effect is a shoo-in.

I completely agree though, if it's an all time list it's hardly possible to put older games on there. The only thing that really holds up is the story. Virtually every other aspect of the game has been vastly approved upon by even mediocre RPGs today, and including them is just giving them benefits because of memory and influence.

It's not a list of RPG's with the latest and greatest features. In terms of eligibility I'd say it's more down to it's impact at the time of release and it's reputation over time. Meaning games like FFVII and Suikoden would have to make the list.

I know, and that's the problem. Someone who didn't play these back when they were relatively new would have some trouble going back and seeing what the big deal is about. They'd need to remake the games with modern graphics and updated gameplay to do it any justice.

While some may benefit from the remake treatment I think others need to be left as they are. They were standouts of their time and should be left with that as their crowning achievement. Half assed attempts at remakes don't always improve the original experience. Hollywood has aptly displayed this over the last few years.

I agree, Euphoric. However, a lot of gamers who may have hopped the bandwagon later, like post PS2, really do struggle with older titles because of the visuals. I figured this out when recommending older Final Fantasy titles to people -- DS remakes don't count.

Well, I've been gaming for years. So I played a lot of things back when they were awesome. A lot of them aren't so awesome when I go play them again though.

Really the problem I have with older games is usually of the gameplay variety. The old school graphics have a charm of their own, but I've been spoiled by having deep gameplay, and it's difficult to play turn based rpg's, especially when the game was early even in the turn based days.

I find it kind of funny that he used a picture of KOTOR 2 despite him talking about the first one.

WAYYY better, story wise at least. SO3 probably had the best gameplay of all of them, though.

Best part about the lists is that there is no top list.. but opens the subject up for discussion and can introduce new game ideas to people who are unaware of games they might have passed up.
