IGN have compiled a list of ten essential XBLA games featuring a wide variety of titles. However, there are quite a few names notably absent from the list, such as Bionic Commando Rearmed, Battlefield 1943, and Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) really came into its own this year. From enormous adventures you can sink dozens of hours into to modest but addictive little puzzle games, Microsoft's downloadable game service has a wide variety of quality offerings.

We know this time of year there are a bunch of new Xbox 360 owners out there, so we've put together this list of the ten essential XBLA games you should download pronto. This is by no means a comprehensive list of everything the service has to offer, but it's a good jumping off point. There are great XBLA games not included in this top 10, but these are the titles we think have the most mass appeal and deserve a home on everyone's hard drive.

I bought Splosion Man and thought it was awful. Nowhere near top 10 material. Marble Blast Ultra is definitely worth a purchase for 400MSP though!

Splosion Man, Trials HD & Shadow Complex are definitely games that were worth their MS Points, each of them has brought me hours of play time.

I know its pretty much a re-make, but how the hell is Portal: Still Alive not on this list? Its *bleep*ing Portal for gods sake.

Apart from that, a very respectable list (though I wouldn't have Splosion Man that high up the list), I really must get some of these (I've been a bit lazy on the xbla front...).

Splosion Man is gold. If the haters hate it, its because it frustrates them and it is doing its job(the game openly mocks you when you beat it).

    Shadow Complex I definitely want.

Good thing MvC2 isn't on there, its no fun anymore, just full of spammers/campers/ect

The only reason I can dislike Splosion Man is because it frustrates me? Nah, the only thing about SM that frustrates me is the ridiculous amount of lag when playing multiplayer over Xbox Live. Other than that, level 1 is not much different form the last level, it's so dull.

However, the doughnut song is amazing.

SM is better off local MP or alone FYI

Clearly, hence my point about lag "FYI". Regardless of what you do, it's generally not that fun. Multiplayer over Xbox Live with 3 other friends is pretty good but otherwise its terrible, and given the lag you can only enjoy it for about 2 levels.
