This is a list of the top 10 video game controllers of all-time, chosen by a writer at gaming website PlanetXbox360.com - going back to the very start (or almost) of console gaming (PC gaming is not included in this list).

If there’s anything gamers usually judge about a video game console, even before its games most of the time, one can take a wild guess that it’ll be the controller. Controllers are the peripheral that we either love or hate with all our hearts, but at the end of the day has proven to be the most necessary over the past three decades. Without a controller, the character would just sit there lazily waiting for us to do something while we contemplated what we would do if we actually had a controller. And how many times have you felt the panic of watching your controller disconnect in the middle of a campaign or even worse, a multiplayer match. As so much hinges on what a controller can do and how comfortable it is, this once simple accessory has over time become a cornerstone of what we expect from our consoles and if the controller is a nightmare to hold, then odds are we won’t be playing any games that were meant to use it.

Genesis six-button and Saturn seem to be curious omissions.

N64 controller two places above the Gamecube one? Nonono, the placement of the analogue stick was terrible and we only put up with it at the time because there was no better (console) alternative to compare to.

I'm surprised that the PS Dualshock beat an Xbox conroller on an Xbox website

As far as dual analog stick controllers go, the Gamecube and 360 controllers are the only ones I've ever felt completely comfortable with. The original Xbox one wasn't too bad (after they made it smaller, of course), but it was always odd to press those black and white buttons. I'm glad they made the change to the left and right bumpers instead.

I've never liked the Dualshocks because of the analog stick placement. I prefer the Gamecube and Xbox ones where the left one is up higher. It makes more sense that way, since your thumb doesn't naturally rest sideways like that. It seems to allow for sharper movements, which is what you typically need on that joystick for games that utilize both sticks, since that's almost always the stick for movement. As for the right joystick, you typically need more subtle movements, since that one is usually for aiming and such, so it's better to have it in the unnatural position, where you're challenged with a little bit of resistance. Plus, they obviously have to make the buttons easier to access on the right side.

I also like how the analog sticks on the 360 have sunken-in centers, which makes sure your thumb stays in place. The Dualshocks feel like they're pushing your thumbs away, since they're raised outward.
