As the titles proclaims, it is a list compiled of the top 100 games of all time. The list goes back to the dawn of the 8-bit era too December 2006. Did your favorite game make it on there? Click to find out!

We like to hear people scream at us. Unfortunately, it has been a long while since anyone's actually done it. To compensate, the editors of all three IGN Editorial offices (US, UK, and Australia) got together and decided that it was time to revisit one of the most controversial topics in our business...

Our criteria for creating this list of our picks for the Top 100 Games of All Time are as follows:

-Eligible games had to have been released no later than December 31, 2006 (perspective is a good thing)
-A number of factors were taken into consideration when selecting a winner: How good the game was compared to others of its time, its overall game design, how well it stands up over the years, how influential it has been in the realm of gaming and just plain how much fun we had playing it are all points for contention.
-The list is comprised of single, stand-alone titles and doesn't include compilations, expansion packs or add-ons.
-Titles with multiple editions such as collector's boxes, gold editions or direct re-releases have been consolidated into one single entry, with the edition deemed most deserving taking precedence.
-Updated versions of original titles were only included on the list if they were significantly different from their predecessors.

"And at number one spot, Halo 3!"

Because we all know that's what'll happen.

Or you could try reading the full list, where you'll realise that Halo 3 doesn't even make the top 100.

      Halo 3 didn't exist in 2006.

WTF? tetris number 2? If they expanded it to 2007 it would have to be the top 110 games of all time.

If you're not over the age of 18 when you made this statement, then shut up.

What does being over the age of 18 have to do with this game list?
I think your the one who needs to keep quite, and stop causing problems.

That was the worst list ever. They've just crammed 80 odd retro titles into the list and then finished off with the household name titles. Plus almost every freaking Mario game made it in there and most of the top 10 was nintendo shit. They ignored most modern games and let shit like Ninja Gaiden into it. Shit.

There are so many games missing from there it's not funny.

Ninja Gaiden isn't shit its one of the best action game of all time in my eye. It deserves the spot it got. Don't Diss him, Ryu > All

I can disagree on a few things there. Tetris should be number 1. SMB should be more near 5 or 6. RE 4 should be number 2 because that damn near redefined a GREAT game. I do believe Super Metroid should be top 3 because IMO and many others is was one of the best games of all time. But still, pretty good list.

    wow...this is....wow.
They forgot Twilight Princess which should have been AT LEAST in the top 50. it was easily better than Guitar Hero 2. Mario Bros 3 shoulda been WAAAAY up there, not in the 30s. and no Splinter Cell....AND SUPER MARIO RPG: LEGEND OF THE SEVEN STARS,PAPER MARIO and PAPER MARIO 2? Those were some of the greatest games made.

I'd want to see Age of Empires 2 on there. But it's lacking PC titles...all it's got is WoW, HL/HL2, and Doom, noticeable PC titles.

Gotta say that I'm glad to see FFT on there, though.

Meh, lists like these are always worthless. Too biased. Also there's always a few things that deserve to be on the list but just never get there.

Very sceptical over multiple titles there and I am rather shocked to see FFVII not at least in the top 5 though I would not argue with the top 3 to much though Super Mario 64 still made it with all them glitches =O

Not bad. I felt they went overboard with the Mario titles though. Jak II should have got on there. More Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games as well

    Dine_Agoti Dec 1, 07
Oh well. At least the Ocarina of Time made it fairly high on the list.

    Sayyed Dec 1, 07
Wow I just relised none of the jak games made it on their. Neither the crash bandicoot games either. Atleast shadow of the colossus made it up pretty high.

How Civilization II made it in the top 3 is beyond me.

And I'm tired of seeing people always naming the original Super Mario Bros. as the greatest game of all time. Yeah, it basically set the standard for every video game after it, but come on. There are so many games better then it. (especially Ocarina of Time, which should be #1 imo)

Agreed most games up there are pretty stupid, but I guess others like them, Halo 3 definatley deserves to be up there though that's one of the best games out there to me!!!

Wow, how many times did Mario and Link appear on this list to be fair the are good games but I was quite suprised about how frequent they appeared.
All the nostalgic games were cool though, I remember playing loads as a kid, or those too old for me I remember watching my dad play. Some games on the list were older than me though
It was a shame Tomb Raider 2 didn't apear on there, I would of thought it would be in somewhere. Also no Age of Empires. No Crash Bandicoot. I think there was a few titles that got over looked.

I agree with the top 2 because well everyone has or have played them (mario bros, and tetris) but what is civilazation 2 doing at no. 3 it should have been Master Of Orion or Pong some other crowning achievement of the industry not civilization 2 what the hell is this, and why isn't FF7 in the top ten or even 20 this list is a little biases

    Pheonixfire Dec 11, 07
it's not that i just don't agree with mostly all of the top 20 it's that their's like 10 mario games and 8 zelda games. there were original game that deserved to be on the list rather than all of the sequels
