The top 7 games which just didn't deserve it.

theundertakergonzo | May 14, 2008 | Top List | Misc
GR compiles the top 7 games which weren't that great but for some reason are seen as classics. At seventh was Sonic Adventure, sixth Super Stars Wars Trilogy, fifth was world class track meet, fourth final fight, third Oregon trail, second had Licenced NES crap and the top of the chart was Final Fantasy VII.
You know that heartwarming sensation you get while remembering games of yesteryear? The one that makes you ponder, "Why aren't games this good nowadays?" It's a lie. It's a childhood veil that, once lifted, exposes how shitty some of your favorite games were all along. They didn't just sour with age - they were never that fun, you just put up with them because there was no better alternative.

Metroid, for example, is fairly crap by today's standards. But it was actually good for its day and therefore doesn't make the list. But plenty of other games that people cling to (GR editors included) were not the end-all be-all titles we built them up to be. We allowed them to attain levels of fame well beyond their capabilities, and now it's time to take 'em down a notch.

WTF. i bet a million dollars whoever wrote this has never playd ffvii. All he quotes is sum PC editor who doesnt know wat the hell hes talking about. If ffvii is so overrated y does it sell for 50 bucks 11 years later.

That argument is so flawed. Simply because it sells for a high price on e-bay doesn't make it brilliant.

Pfft. I hate to sound biased here (being the FFVII mod and all) but I really wish game sites would cut FFVII some slack. Yes, we all know that the FFVII Compilation isn't great and, yes, we know how annoying the FFVII fanboys are (especially the ones who haven't even played the original game).

But that shouldn't detract from the original FFVII itself. Heck, FFVII is the reason RPGs are the way they are today - It's the reason RPGs became popular outside Japan ... That's a damn fine achievement for any game to have. And GR wonder why it got praised so highly? Don't they remember back when it was first released?
It was a good game - it was friggin' revolutionary. It's just a shame there are so many people nowadays who go out of their way to prove how bad they think it is.

But hey, I suppose that makes me a "fangirl" for liking FFVII - Because nowadays only a fangirl or fanboy can enjoy it.

So poo to idiots who say otherwise. And poo to Squeenix for ruining a good game - It's their fault people are sick of FFVII. [/end rant]

Exactly what I was going to say.

Final Fantasy VII is the only Final Fantasy that was anywhere near good enough for me to play for 60+ hours. Just because there are a tonne of annoying wapanese wannabe's who bum it into oblivion does not make it a bad game.

Too true, too true, people these days label FF7 as overrated without ever playing it and SE is ruining it with shitty sequels and preqels.

Gothic Girl is right. The complete compilation isn't good. Hell, I just hated Advent Children. I've never played Dirge of Cerberus, but people say it's shit. Crisis Core is pretty good, but even that isn't as good as FFVII original. Now, I've never played the original PSX version. I only played the PC version made by EIDOS, but even that was pretty good.
No, FFVII is NOT overrated. It's just that Square Enix is trying to milk it too much.

Bravo Gothic Girl, you always put forth a really good argument.

I may not be the biggest fan of FFVII but I know that game was a masterpiece in its time, maybe a bit overhyped but one of the best games on the Playstation and perhaps any Sony console. It doesn't really deserve a place on that list.

The rest I don't care for

I want people to remember this. People who are so stuck up in their classics to even go so far as put them as the "Best games ever made" completely disregarding today's games that supposedly never even come close, THIS is the *bleep*ing truth.

      I agree.

I'll use the example of GTAIV. Although it may not be the best game of all time, all people say is how it will never come close to, for example, LoZ: OoT. Which is a great game, but I still think people just disregard newer games, usually for the reason that it "can't beat the classics". I don't see why more modern games can't be, or become, classics.

Oh, and Sonic Adventure was awesome.

I'll use another one. As a Metal Gear Solid fan, I was telling my younger cousin how much the scenes were *bleep*ing great...this is me, totally brainwashed into believing that this game would blow him away...I go to Youtube and find the video...only that both of us are completely disappointed in seeing how a game does not get better with age.

That's not to say that I stopped liking the game...it's just that...it looks and feels "Ugh" compared to even "The Twin Snakes", the game I thought could never match the original.

I thought Sonic Adventures for Dreamcast was *bleep*ing awesome. I still enjoy playing that game to this day when I feel like playing my Dreamcast.

Ditto. Robotnik's Voice was pure secks, though.

I remember I recently played through SA again. I did notice that I died rather easy (mostly through glitches), but still, it's one of the best 3D Sonic Games out there. I still can't help but agree with GR's opinion on FFVII. It's the only FF game with more than 2 spin-offs. The game was great, but please, let the great giant sleep.

I think this article made from GR are biased fanboys themselves.

Half if not most those games were epic in its time. I loved Oregon Trail, i remember playing it at school back in the day.

Gothic Girl summed up my feelings on FF7, i still don't believe it should be on the list.

FF7 still proves, today, that RPG's can be great even without the amazing graphics that todays game has. FF7 for me, is the greatest.
Of course i may be biased on this front since it was my first FF game and RPG i ever played, so i may put it higher than most.

Besides graphics i think everything about the game truly defined RPG's.

Iam sorry but no one thought that freaking Top Gun and Back to the Future were classics. Never. Just look at the Angry Video Game Nerd's reviews of those games.

FFVII not a classic? *bleep* off.

And TMNT was awesome. Hard, but certainly worthy of a classic.

But Back to the Future did suck. Can't see how that'd be a classic other than the films.

    loltrolled.

FFVII was good no matter how much people like to hate on it, and I think all FF fans can be comfortable knowing that they, at least, appreciate it. I would still play it if I had a copy that worked...

WTF... They don't like Sonic Adventure? That game is even more awesome than Shadow the Hedgehog, which, by the way, is also immensely underrated.
