Xbox Live's Major Nelson walks us through basic Avatar creation in the upcoming Xbox 360 Dashboard update, part of the "New Xbox Experience". Users who do not want to use the Avatar system will only need to spend a few seconds choosing a randomised creation, but those who are willing to spend more time will find a multitude of customisation options at their fingertips.

The Xbox 360 Dashboard refresh is rumoured to be released late this October.

This actually looks a lot more robust than I had imagined. Can't wait to give it a go. I just hope Microsoft don't start selling items for Avatars on the Xbox Live Marketplace. It would be nice to instead be able to unlock items after gaining specific Achievements in games.

The avatars look a lot like Wiis. But I don't think that's such a big deal tbh, this is probably the best way for them. Wonder if the PS3 will make it's own avatar system.

Xen, I agree. I hope they don't release game packages, like a Halo 3 game appearance or Gears of War/Gears of War 2 game appearance package for Microsoft Points. Say, you have to unlock a specific achievement in a game and unlock the game appearance package or something.

Looks like we're gonna have a lot of avatar fights between Spartans and COGS.

This avatar system looks absolutely amazing. Perhaps if Nintendo put more detail into theirs... but, then again, that was years ago.

... gee, maybe they'll apply an avatar system to the next handheld? That'd be cool.
