Here it is, in case you missed it the Japanese trailer for The Legend of Chun Li. So what you will, but I am willing to give it a shot.. heck I saw the Van Damme monstrocity in the theaters. From the trailer there is some impressive choreography that elevates it above the Dead or Alive (the one based on the game, not the Takeshi Miike hyperviolent film).

In all honesty, do yourselves a favor. Check out the original 2004 Japanese OVA... Don't even get the manga version, go for the original for the japanese voice actors and original soundtrack.

What do you get when you mix Kristen Kreuk, Michael Clarke Duncan and videogame license? Why you get the new Street Fighter movie, The Legend of Chun-Li. The new Japanese trailer was released today. After watching it, I can say that this is why we all have Netflix. As I will admit I am curious to see it, more for the train wreck value, but I wouldn’t spend real money. How long do we think this will last in the theaters, or does it have straight to DVD written all over it? Either way without Jean Claude Van Damme I don’t know if I care.

What the hell...this guy actually believes that the previous live-action SF film is better? Why would he mention Van Damme?

I will see this movie, looks decent enough, though I don't get why Balrog is using a rocket launcher. xD

      Final Blade Dec 30, 08
That's because IT IS BETTER. This has Worse character placement(although picking Michael Clarke Duncan for Balrog was the only good move they did). Kristin doesn't resemble Chun-li at all. No Ryu or Ken, which are flagship characters to the series, and should be involved, even a 15 minute Cameo or something, to the movie, kinda killed this game. In fact both this and the new DB movie will epically fail on all cylinders.

The trailer sucks alot for a SF movie. For a regular action movie looks decent.

While it is probably true that this and the DB movie will fail on epic proportions, I don't think that this can be worse than the first movie. That one was just ludicrous. Van Damme as Guile? Cammy as Guile's sidekick? Ryu and Ken playing second fiddle to GUILE?! That movie was more of a comedy than an action flick. Do you even remember the last few scenes where Bison does a Psycho Crusher?! I died laughing when I saw it. And that god awful final scene where everybody's posing together. It wasn't just absurd, it was cheesy.

At least this movie will probably be better directed. The fact that they chose not to put in Ryu and Ken seems like they're wanting to focus more on the other characters and give Chun-Li's perspective (which isn't all that interesting). It seems like they don't just want to stuff in every character from the SF universe and actually try to focus on a plot which doesn't involve everybody trying to gangbang Bison. I'm not saying the movie's going to be stellar, but the bar isn't set very high to begin with.

          Final Blade Dec 30, 08
The fact they chose Klein as Charlie, Kreuk as Chun Li and the Black eye Peas guy as Vega turns this into a epic failure then the first. Kreuk legs are scrawy as hell, barely is Chun Li caliber. The first one was more enjoyable then this trailer. The only thing they done right with this movie is put Micheal Clarke Duncan as Balrog, but of course him using a Rocket Launcher makes it worse. Sorry I cannot fathom this movie being better by any means to the original SF movie. At least that movie had believable stuff.

Ok...Capcom should apologize for not getting actors that look EXACTLY like the characters. Oh come on Final, that's a stupid argument. Kreuk is at least of Chinese descent, Klein's shaping up to be Charlie, and Taboo...well we'll see how it goes. You're judging a book by it's cover.

Must be crazy to think that the old SF movie is better than something like this...they don't have random characters all over the place, and it looks much more action-packed. Meh, I do not suggest that you see this film then. Your mind is already made up that it'll suck, and I'm not saying it'll be of Oscar performance, but to better enjoy something, you'd need to go in it with a clear head, be it a show, game, or anything.

          Final Blade Dec 31, 08
Storm, I grew up from Street Fighter, you can call me a die hard SF fan. But to say this movie will do SF any justice, is like saying Dragon Ball will do Justice to DB, DBZ series. And pretty much your whole point can be directed to DB fans as well, which we all know any fans of the anime or games will not like this movie. I for one enjoyed the first Live film cause I enjoyed the performance of Jean Claude Van Damme And Raul Julia. I thought those two played very good and did show some Guile/Bison characteristics. And the one who played Chun Li in that movie was brilliant. She should have played Chun Li or an actually Chinese(sorry no part decent is enough for me) girl.

Me being a MASSIVE fan, I'm very Critical on who should play the part. Taboo, he's freaking Hispanic. I don't ever recall Vega being anything other then White. I'm not trying to be racist here though, but honestly? And Kelin as Charlie? Again out of all the actors around, they pick him? Let's not get started on who playing Gen in there.

As I said Micheal Clarke Duncan is perfect for balrog. Body type, and everything.

Vega is Hispanic, he is from Spain. That's the origin of all Hispanic countries.

I'm a huge SF fan myself, Final, perhaps even bigger than you, but beggars can't be choosers. Capcom's involved with this film, aren't they? Even though they don't look the part to your standards, what are the odds of getting an athletic, large-thighed Chinese chick to play Chun-Li? Kristin is of Chinese descent, they are staying true to the character in that sense. And looks are one thing with a film, how the character is portrayed is another. If they fit the role of how the fictional character is, then why question their acting choice?

Meh, even if the film overall turns out good, I know that your mind is made up, and you'll only put it down upon seeing it, un-impressed. By the way, Rocker's correct. Vega is from Spain.

They could have at least got a big-thighed chick to play Chun-Li. After all, Chun-Li's thighs are her main feature. Kristen Kreuk might be one of Hollywood's few Chinese (or, in her case, half-Chinese) actors, but she's also one of the slimmest. Heck, they could have delayed the movie a few months while they bulked up Kreuk to make it at least loks as though she's a muscly martial-arts fighter. The girl certainly needs it.

How do they build on the thighs? It'll take a long time even with intensive training. Most if not all of the top runners today don't have the thighs of Chun-Li...but yeah they could have had her put on a few pounds.

I agree that Kristin is rather slim, but meh, I think we should give her the benefit of the doubt, like we should with Goku in the DB movie. Hell, I don't like who they have for Law in the Tekken film, he's my favorite character in the series, but I'll see how he brings the character to life.

But if we want to go deeper into appearances, I can argue about the first live-action SF film. The actor for Ken was not in shape. They could have at least had him work out some. Ryu's portrayal showed a built, dedicated man, whilst Ken was a slob wanting to do whatever he could to get money. But it's fine, I looked passed that.

          RabidChinaGirl Dec 31, 08
Hasn't it occurred to anyone this movie is just fan service? Judging by the casting, I'd say it is.

Kreuk, despite her half-Asian descent, still looks distinctly Caucasian to me. She's not exactly a good actress, but she's pretty and guys like her... HENCE she was hired. Big thighs would've been a pretty nice gesture for the fans and toward the character of Chun Li, but I would've been willing to see that sacrificed for the sake of acquiring a more Chinese-looking actress. I am not going to fool myself into thinking they can find actors who look exactly like the characters as they are in the games, but SERIOUSLY, were they even trying? Hell no.

And I was always under the impression Vega was supposed to be beautifully sexy.... which the guy from Black Eye Peas isn't, in my opinion. But you know what, it's a Street Fighter movie, and I don't even care anymore.

I didn't care for the trailer either, but it doesn't seem to be geared toward Western audiences.

Sorry, not paying $8-10 for this flick. Watchmen nao plz.

Unrelated observation Oh, and why is it that so many movies hire Chinese actors to play Japanese, and Japanese actors to play Chinese? I always thought that was funny.

Haha, you're right, RabidChinaGirl. But what else can we expect? The whole fan service bit is another edge to gain money, and that's all that matters to the companies. They went with well-known actors to play the parts, to be expected.

In the long run, I'd rather they just do CGI or animated. That way, these discussions can be avoided, and it's really more preferred.

My only request as a hardcore SF fan is for Vega to keep his mask on THROUGHOUT the movie. Vega's supposed to be handsome. How the hell did they end up with Taboo?! The only acting experience he has is starring in two obscure films and a bunch of music videos. At any rate, while it is helpful to know that he does practices Jeet Kun do, it's not the fighting style Vega uses. So I hope they get that right and don't allow Taboo to go all apeshit and ruin Vega completely.

If you think the Japanese-Chinese crossover is funny, Rabid, I read a Newsweek article about Israelis often playing Middle Eastern roles.

Meh, it looks alright. I don't think I'd go see it in theaters, but who knows.

I am, however, really excited to see Vega. He was generally one of my favorite characters to use. Him and Tammy. XD

Vega's being played by the guy from the Black Eyed Peas, who's name I'm forgetting right now. Or at least he was the last time I checked. That announcement kind of killed the character for me.

As for the movie, I'll give it a chance. Heck, I even saw the Van Damme movie recently just for the nostalgia factor. But the character announcements plus the fact that there's no Ryu and Ken, kind of kept my expectations low.

I think if you decide not to take the movie seriously at all, and sort of squint a little bit, the trailer doesn't look have bad.

    I like Kreuk anyways.

I've watched Kristin on Smallville for 5 years; it's for that reasons alone I will see this movie.

    She's *bleep*ing hot.

OKay... I've been seeing some things about this topic and obviously Storm and Final Blade are fighting each other about Chun-Li and being the Hardcore gaming fan of Street Fighter. So, I decided to get on this!

I am a hardcore Street Fighter fan and I grew up with it since it first came out. Although the 1st game was really hard, but I finished off Sagat like Ryu did with a Shoryuken (like the story and UDON Entertainment comics).

I'd have to agree with Storm on this! Although, I don't really think that the 1st Street Fighter movie (live action) was bad. I think that the 1st Street movie (live action) was only an inspiration. Appearently, the 1st film has its "Blu-Ray" version: http://www.joblo.com/dvdclinic/index.php?id=4005

Final Blade... Just HOW much of a fan are you in Street Fighter? Jeez. You got Vega all wrong LOL, but I'm glad xxxRockerxxx corrected you. Advice: Think before you act. Try it! Do plenty of research all they way from the oldies! Look into this as well: http://www.shadowlawv.com/

And Omar Dogan of UDON Entertainment is currently doing the Street Fighter: Chun-Li Legends comic book series which will be out next year! When Street Fighter IV (comic book) comes out, Joe Ng will be the lead artist of that series than Alvin Lee.

People should do their research than to MAKE themselves look like a fool or some stupid idiot... I dunno why people would want some big-thigh female to play the role. Why is the focus of Chun-Li only on the lower portion of her body? It should be the WHOLE figure! I think they picked a good actress to cast the role of the female fighter! "Why" you ask? Because, you WILL NEVER see a big-thigh young chinese girl! You only see that in an older chinese woman like around their mid 50's. Well, if you see some chinese girl about her (Chun-Li) age and height that has big-thighs in real life (DO NOT PHOTOSHOP), you better make sure that you get us some proof and tell us EXACTLY where you saw her. I've seen many chinese girls all the time and none of them have big thighs, there as skinny as Kreuk's... You watch the olympics, you will NEVER see one with legs like those!

Chun-Li's legs are in fact skinny, firm and sexy!... The big thigh thingy, is just a bit of a definition of the muscle on her legs that shows her exercise of it!

Another thing about Chun-Li... Is her name... It's not ChunLi, Chun Li, Chunli, or Chun li. It's Chun-Li! Back then, her last name use to be chong or chung, but since the 1st film came out, it was changed to Zhang and Capcom didn't recogize the character till later in the movie. So, they agreed to change her last name to Zhang!

I would NEVER cast Neal McDonough as Bison. I would cast Agent Smith as Bison and I have no idea who Maya is. Probably a new character...

About Balrog with a Bazooka or Rocket Launcher, I think that the weapon packs a punch! LOL
