Why can't companies just show an advert that RELATES to the product?

What a waste of money that was when gameplay footage of Gears 2, Fable 2 and Halo 3 would've achieved the same thing.

I completely agree, the same with the Mac commercials. Imagine if a car company set out commercials that never showed the cars or hardly even mentioned them.

What's wrong with the Apple Mac commercials? They explain why "x" is easier on a Mac. It's not like they're abstract, they directly mention and discuss the product.

Ads haven't advertised PRODUCTS since the 80's. Most agencies wrack their brains over selling you a lifestyle, and the brain somehow makes a connection.

I liked the ad because it was enjoyable to me, but... yeah, I can't say it does a good job of selling the console -- and I already have a 360.

Maybe it goes along with Microsoft's new strategy of trying to bring in a broader user base? Those "casual" gamers aren't going to be impressed by gameplay footage from the titles you mention, so maybe Microsoft is just going for a general, "Wow, this is cool!" response.

I don't see why not? I'd hardly call frat boys hardcore gamers and they're pretty much the biggest base of games like Halo and Gears.

Most college kids I know aren't hardcore gamers. They just play Gears of War after a joint and have no idea what the *bleep* games like Mass Effect are.

Casual gamer myself and no, both those titles do not appeal to me yet Battlefield Heroes and Unreal Tournament III do

I very much doubt you're a casual gamer in the way I expressed.

RBC is right. When someone sees a commercial that just says "BUY FLIPPO SOAP ITS GOOD" they just don't take interest in it and forget it, However when they see a really well done commercial they remember it and pay more attention to it than the other riff raff on there. If they see advertising that is really good it gives them the impression that the company is really professional.

Same reason why they employ celebrities to advertise things, "Wow so and so uses this, that must be a good product" or "Wow they got (enter celebrety) to do an advertisement for them! they must have payed a lot! they must be a good company!" there not thinking about the product, there thinking about the celebrity and yet they buy the product that the company is selling.

When someone watches a commercial there not going to buy the product right there and then, in front of there TV.

Abstract advertising works. Think of all the best ads you have seen, were they directly related to the product? What about the one where it had that massive chain reaction thing with all the car parts, that told you absolutely nothing about the car, what it did was get the company's name into your head and made you remember it. Or that whole "BOW CHIKA WOW WOW" thing, what did that have to do with spray? absolutely nothing, yet the ad was a success.

That's what MS is going after with this commercial. There not trying to tell you about some great offer that there having, or some amazing new product. There just trying to get their company and brand into your head. That was their goal.

Agree except for one thing: this particular commercial was actually pretty forgettable (IMHO). It took the creative approach, but failed on the creativity. I mean, that's a pretty generic looking space sequence, nothing there any of us haven't seen before, the graphics are good but not incredible, and in general, there is nothing about it that REALLY stands out.

It was alright, though despite my liking similar music, the music used for that commercial actually annoyed me.

Microsoft they had it right... Sony are now advertising games on TV with gameplay and none of this artsy crap, well in Europe atleast and now Microsoft have decided to do the artsy crap, all that advert did was make me want to watch Wall-E.
