What a waste of money that was when gameplay footage of Gears 2, Fable 2 and Halo 3 would've achieved the same thing.
I liked the ad because it was enjoyable to me, but... yeah, I can't say it does a good job of selling the console -- and I already have a 360.
Maybe it goes along with Microsoft's new strategy of trying to bring in a broader user base? Those "casual" gamers aren't going to be impressed by gameplay footage from the titles you mention, so maybe Microsoft is just going for a general, "Wow, this is cool!" response.
olol.
Most college kids I know aren't hardcore gamers. They just play Gears of War after a joint and have no idea what the *bleep* games like Mass Effect are.
Same reason why they employ celebrities to advertise things, "Wow so and so uses this, that must be a good product" or "Wow they got (enter celebrety) to do an advertisement for them! they must have payed a lot! they must be a good company!" there not thinking about the product, there thinking about the celebrity and yet they buy the product that the company is selling.
When someone watches a commercial there not going to buy the product right there and then, in front of there TV.
Abstract advertising works. Think of all the best ads you have seen, were they directly related to the product? What about the one where it had that massive chain reaction thing with all the car parts, that told you absolutely nothing about the car, what it did was get the company's name into your head and made you remember it. Or that whole "BOW CHIKA WOW WOW" thing, what did that have to do with spray? absolutely nothing, yet the ad was a success.
That's what MS is going after with this commercial. There not trying to tell you about some great offer that there having, or some amazing new product. There just trying to get their company and brand into your head. That was their goal.
