In his weekly "Rev Rants" series, Anthony Burch discusses sexy heroines, and which is worse - a heroine who overtly panders to your sexual impulses, or one who tries to hide it? He also explains why Bayonetta is a more honest and forthcoming character than Lara Croft.

Go to the source for the full video rant.

Every week, sort of, features editor Anthony Burch discusses a topic of his choosing for his Rev Rant video series. He then writes an explanatory introduction to each episode where he refers to himself in the third person.

Which is worse -- a heroine who overtly panders to your sexual impulses, or one who tries to hide it? I can't hope to answer that question for anybody else, but I give my own answer to a question nobody was really asking in this week's Rev Rant. That's pretty much the best I can do.

More honest; yes. Ridiculously over the top and stupid; yes.

Pretty much. But if you take it (Bayonetta's character) in a sort of tongue in cheek manner, its better, you just appreciate the look and style, knowing that they know it is ridiculous and over the top.

I find it hard to take her as anything other then what she is though; a poorly veiled marketing strategy.

But....Aren't most female characters (and main characters in general) in games, and movies, the same? Sure, some actually have real power to their role, and are more than just sex objects, but honestly, much of what draws horny (straight) males to movies is either: Explosions, or breasts....or some combination of the two.

Most female characters are poorly veiled marketing strategies to draw in men? I highly disagree. Many are well-veiled and, more importantly, not running around fingering themselves. I think to generalize her in the same league as most female characters and main characters is misunderstanding what she is. It isn't that she's attractive or there to draw in men, it's that she may as well be thrusting her crotch in your face whilst massaging her tits with oil.

But... it's not veiled at all... I'm pretty sure they're taking every opportunity to show that it's not.

She's practically a female Dante but without the one-liners(as far as I'm aware of)

And I'd still take her over the tilt-controlled tit-twitch in NGS2.

TBH I'd take neither and leave that whole style to just die.

I like the over the top action and stylized presentation of these games, but sometimes they do try too hard with the sex appeal.

Then again, that's just me, I am getting this just because I like making things go boom and thought some of the summons looked cool, particularly that demonic dragon head.

Try to hard with the sex appeal?

Shame the guy can't pronounce Lah-ra Croft. Other than that it made some decent points, although stealing all Yahtzee's points about Lara seemed unwise.

    I giggled silently to myself.

Again, much love for Anthony Burch, great stuff. I've often thought the same things, how tongue-in-cheek action is better than trying to hide itself with facades of emotion. Not saying that the emotion and action can mix, just don't forcefully mix the two.

    Examples:

    Tongue-in-cheek: Army of Darkness
    Emotion/action: Saving Private Ryan
