At this year's CES, Sony revealed a brand new Heavy Rain video, saying that "graphically, Heavy Rain blows Uncharted 2 away."

Another reporter and I were talking to the representative about how he would categorize Heavy Rain since it appeared to be a more passive experience. When Uncharted 2’s action oriented gameplay and graphics came up, the representative said, "Graphically, it [Heavy Rain] blows Uncharted 2 away."

I saw it in person the other day at CES but I didn't think it looked as good as Uncharted 2. It still looked incredibly nice though. Very different styles so it's hard to judge and I don't really think it matters whether it looks as good as U2 anyways.

The game looks great, but I don't think it was ever going to look better than Uncharted 2. And no, I don't think it will be improved any from what I saw at CES. It by no means looked bad in the slightest.

I still can't decide if the character models in Hevy Rain look amazingly realistic or creepily entering uncanny-valley :/

      That (bolded).....

It'll be a while before the uncanny valley is passed, in both games and movies. It's hard to replicate the 'soul' behind a person that makes them seem real, as opposed to freakishly realistic.

The eyes are the big thing. When is the last time you saw a realistic CG character with eyes that looked properly alive? Mostly they look glassy, plain dead, or just a bit off at best.

Eyes in CGI usually don't move nearly enough to seem real. A human's eyes make hundreds of small, almost indiscernable movements, and their movements are usually jerky and quick. In CGI the eyes commonly don't move very quickly and seem to stare straight forward a lot.

Until they can properly emulate the fast movements of the eye, uncanny valley will never be breached.

You've already seen plenty of CGI humans that you didn't even know where fake. I guarantee. The problem is that you don't even know the difference when there's a good CG human and you CLEARLY see the difference when it's bad CGI.

I think Heavy Rain is aiming for realism which is something Uncharted 2 touches on visually, but the characters while detailed still look plastic like and lack the skin detail of a real human. Heavy Rain has that detail that just pushes it so close to the point where people in the game are really close to looking real. For that I can agree with Sony that graphically Heavy Rain is a much better looking game than Uncharted 2.

I think Heavy Rain looks better from a technical standpoint, although Uncharted 2 has more interesting art direction.

I don't think they can be compared all too much due to the differences in art direction and style.

On realism though, I don't think games will ever truly look like real life while completely using CGI. There are some that are highly detailed, but then they end up going overly detailed to where it doesn't look real anymore. Like adding texture to skin, they go overboard the the people look like they're creepy, old, or leather-skinned. It seems pretty hard to find a balance that represents real life.

    Lmao.

The link for this on the Neoseeker PS3 page cuts off the "Uncharted 2 Away" part of the title.

It just says, "Sony Rep: "Graphically, Heavy Rain Blows..."

    I found that hilarious.

Oh, and I'm really not seeing Heavy Rain blowing U2 away graphically. From what I've seen, U2 is far beyond Heavy Rain. However, that may have changed since I've last seen clips from HR...

Different art styles essentially, Heavy Rain tries to be more realistic and in that regard it does blow Uncharted 2 away as Uncharted 2 does not aim for realism. It is stylised realism, the characters can often look glossy and plastic. The worlds are over the top and full of motion blur and depth of field effects. Uncharted 2 is like a Michael Bay action flick in style where as Heavy Rain is a more real and gritty Christopher Nolan type movie feel.
