Crytek gives a little taste of what the CryEngine 3 can do and it looks absolutely stunning. The video you see is intended for cinema use, but it will more than likely set a standard in the next generation of graphics for gaming.

It is a shame that much of that is from the cinema side of their engine, while it is real time doesn't mean it is gaming optimised. CryEngine 3 is part graphics engine and part animated movie tool. Most of what was in that show reel was not something we will see in gaming for a long time. It will aid people like UbiSoft who love to make CGI trailers and short films as real time rendering will help massively, but I doubt that will translate to gaming yet.. They never say the computer specs that were needed to run the SDK in real time like that.

yeah, thats not the actual gameplay engine. ive no doubt it will still look good but Frosbite 2 will probably be just as good.

Indeed; it's a shame they put this much effort into an engine that isn't for gaming. Cinematic CGI doesn't need a whole lot of help getting where it needs to; in-game visuals could do with an engine like this.

I wouldn't call it a shame as much as this will help amateur film makers hugely. Most people can budget for a ultra high end computer to possibly run this tool what they can't do is budget for a server farm to render a film the way Hollywood can, so CryEngine 3 as a movie tool due to being able to render in real time will help amateurs hugely.
